This change additionally: - disables the in-source build (to prevent conflicts with .envrc), - makes EDG_BASE a cached variable more closely associated with the build, - and fixes a bug with Unix Makefiles.

In contrast to #120, we also maintain the use of CACHE variables for the macro configurations allowing things to more easily be tweaked and viewed with
ccmake.
