feat: host ZCode idle-time (off-peak) tasks in the plugin (v0.11.0) - #2
Completes roadmap stage 6 by hosting ZCode's native idle-time (off-peak) tasks inside the plugin, behind a new offPeakTasksEnabled setting (default off).
Unlike scheduled tasks (v0.10.x, local store), the off-peak queue lives on the Z.ai server: creating a task takes a ticket, the plugin polls its status, and a ready ticket authorizes an unattended run through the plan's hidden idle-time model. Runs stream into the creating bb thread.
Implementation
src/offpeak.ts — wire client for the ticket gateway (/api/v1/off-peak: take / batch status / settle) with double auth (desktop JWT + individual Coding Plan API key — both already read by CodingPlanHost, which also enforces the individual-plan-only support matrix); workspace-scoped offpeak.json store (separate from automations, mirroring the native domain separation); upstream create-failure classification (3101 eligibility, 3103 quota, session-bound guard before spending quota); server-directed polling with clamped intervals; settle outbox with retry; FIFO claims with transient backoff (30s→15min) and 3-strike terminal failures.
Dispatch reuses the automation machinery plus the native per-run execution block: modelSelection on account:{family}-offpeak-idle-plan, modelExecution.requestAuth carrying the JWT/key/ticket headers (key finding: per-run auth crosses via session/send, no reverse-RPC needed), toolDenylist: [CronCreate, OffPeakCreate], offPeakRunType init/resume. A mid-run window expiry (3102) requeues, re-takes a ticket and continues the same session with the native continuation prompt.
Tooling: offPeakToolEnabled: true passed at native create/resume when enabled (registers OffPeakCreate/OffPeakList); reverse RPCs answered workspace-scoped; /zcode-offpeak and /zcode-offpeak-cancel <id> commands.
Knowledge: the undocumented wire contract is pinned in knowledge/contracts/off-peak-protocol.md (draft until live-gateway verification).
Verification
9 new focused tests (199 total): wire shapes and double auth, error-body mapping, create/classification/state machine, sync + expired re-take + settle outbox, FIFO claims, dispatch-level through the synthetic peer with the full modelExecution block asserted, and the 3102 → continuation loop. npm run check green; npm run test:live reports RUNTIME_VERIFIED.
Not verified: the real gateway (needs live Coding Plan requests — plan-gated); the contract doc stays draft until then.
v1 limits (documented)
Tasks need an explicit model at creation; pause/continue not exposed (cancel only); BigModel Team identity headers out of scope (individual plans only, as everywhere in this plugin).

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added optional ZCode Off-Peak task support, disabled by default. Eligible tasks can be queued and run in the session that created them.
Added commands to list and cancel tasks, with task data scoped to the current workspace.
Tasks continue after server window expiry. Busy sessions defer execution, and three consecutive failures park a task.
Tasks require an explicit model and eligible account access.
Documentation
Added setup guidance, task limits and eligibility details, and a draft protocol reference.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Adds opt-in ZCode Off-Peak task support. Tasks use gateway tickets and workspace-scoped storage, then run in their creating session when ready. The bridge adds task management commands, polling, dispatch, and outcome handling.

🔵 Needs a closer look
A dispatch-reservation leak can permanently strand off-peak tasks, and the feature is a large, plan-gated integration against an undocumented wire protocol unverified against the live gateway, warranting human review.
This PR completes roadmap stage 6 by hosting ZCode's native idle-time (off-peak) tasks inside the plugin, behind a new offPeakTasksEnabled setting (default off). Unlike the local scheduled-task store, the off-peak queue lives on the Z.ai server: creating a task takes a ticket, the plugin polls status, and a ready ticket authorizes an unattended run through the plan's hidden idle-time model, streaming into the creating bb thread. It reuses the automation dispatch machinery and adds a dedicated wire client, JSON store, state machine, and continuation loop for mid-run window expiry (3102).
Knowledge-base updates are present and consistent with the AGENTS.md workflow (knowledge/log.md, knowledge/index.md, new knowledge/contracts/off-peak-protocol.md marked draft), with one documentation casing nit flagged below (offPeak.json vs offpeak.json).

Busy deferrals no longer burn failure strikes (CodeRabbit major): deferRun now keeps a separate deferred counter with its own backoff (30s first, doubling to 15min — the off-by-one is fixed); only real run failures count toward the three-strike limit.
ranOnce is admission-gated (CodeRabbit major): markRunning persists running/startedAt before the send, and the new markAdmitted sets ranOnce only after the native side accepts the prompt. A failed/rejected send retries with the original prompt; a crash after acceptance recovers as a continuation. Regression tests cover both crash windows.
Throwing credential reads no longer strand the claim (CodeRabbit major sub-finding): offPeakCredentials() is wrapped; a decrypt-style throw fails the task permanently with the reason.
Permanent failures fail fast (gap exposed by the new tests): missing credentials/plan/model now mark the task failed immediately (completeRun(..., { permanent: true })) instead of parking as retries — matching the upstream "never park deterministic config errors as waiting for idle capacity" rule.
The four re-anchored Codex/Copilot findings (P1 run-progress persistence, P2 claim release, both at the new line numbers) were already addressed by c71d52c: markRunning/markAdmitted + load-time running recovery, and retryRun on every early dispatch exit — verified at the cited lines.
205 tests green (13 files), typecheck/build/format clean, live smoke RUNTIME_VERIFIED.
Review round 3 fixes pushed in f53ff25 — Codex left no approval yet (all reviews are COMMENTED), so this round addresses its three new P2s:
Create/create race (offpeak.ts:449): offPeak/create now reserves the bound session synchronously before awaiting the ticket; a concurrent duplicate for the same session is rejected with session_bound without taking a ticket. Regression test fires two concurrent creates and asserts exactly one ticket.
Rejected creation leaked into the dispatch list (offpeak.ts:491): when persistence fails, the in-memory entry is dropped, so housekeeping can never dispatch a task whose creation the caller saw as local_persist-rejected. Regression test forces a read-only store dir.
Cancel-during-dispatch resurrection (offpeak.ts:675): markRunning, markAdmitted and deferRun now no-op on terminal tasks — a task cancelled while the dispatcher awaited credentials stays cancelled and never dispatches. Regression test applies all three markers after a cancel.
The five remaining comments on this commit are re-anchors of findings already fixed in c71d52c/7232e64 (run-progress persistence, claim release, deferral counters, admission-gated ranOnce) — verified at the cited lines.
208 tests green (13 files), typecheck/build/format clean, live smoke RUNTIME_VERIFIED.

Review round 4 fixes pushed in df8040a (CodeRabbit's fresh pass on f53ff25):
Dispatch gated on persisted markers (amber @ offpeak.ts:701-711): markRunning now returns whether the task actually transitioned to running; dispatchOffPeak aborts before send — releasing the owned child and the concurrency slot — when it returns false (task cancelled while dispatch waited, or the durable write failed).
Failed admission writes fail the run (major @ offpeak.ts:717-720): markAdmitted returns false when the durable ranOnce record cannot be persisted (or the task is terminal). A false after a real acceptance records the run as failed with admission record could not be persisted, releases the child and the slot — a restart can no longer silently replay an accepted task. Mutate failures are no longer swallowed on this path. A false on a cancelled task (re-read checked) stays a clean no-op.
Deterministic persist-failure test (tests @ 832-865): the chmod-based setup is replaced by a directory placed at the store-file path, so the tmp-rename fails identically on every platform/root.
The remaining five comments on this commit are re-anchors of findings already fixed in c71d52c/f53ff25 (run-progress persistence, claim release, create race, rejected-creation removal) — verified at the cited lines; the regression tests added alongside cover each.
208 tests green (13 files), typecheck/build/format clean, live smoke RUNTIME_VERIFIED.

Review round 5 fixes pushed in 55b9909 (CodeRabbit's pass on df8040a):
In-memory rollback on failed marker writes (amber @ bridge.ts:1438): markRunning and markAdmitted no longer go through the fire-and-forget mutate helper. Each snapshots the task, applies the change, persists, and on a persist failure rolls the in-memory entry back — a failed write can no longer strand the task as in-memory running while the bridge aborts the dispatch. Regression test breaks persistence mid-flight and asserts both markers return false with the task left exactly as it was and re-claimable.
Service claim released on aborted dispatch: the markRunning-false branch now calls retryRun(id) before releasing the owned child and the concurrency slot.
The chmod comment (tests @864) targeted the pre-df8040a state — the deterministic directory-at-path setup landed in df8040a. The five Codex/Copilot comments on this commit are the known re-anchors of fixes from c71d52c/f53ff25.

Field-scoped marker rollbacks (CodeRabbit major @ offpeak.ts:718): markRunning/markAdmitted failure handlers no longer restore the whole before snapshot by ID — that could overwrite a concurrent cancel(). They now restore only the marker fields, and only while the entry is still the object the marker wrote (status === "running" / ranOnce === true and non-terminal). A cancel that replaced the entry is preserved; a genuinely-pending marker write rolls back to its prior state. Regression test cancels under a broken store and asserts a late markRunning cannot resurrect the task.
Admission-write failure is permanent (Codex P2 @ bridge.ts:1496): when the native side accepted the prompt but the durable ranOnce record could not be persisted, the task is now failed permanently instead of requeueing — it can never retry an already-accepted run with the original prompt.
Gateway-sized status batches (Codex P2 @ offpeak.ts:589): the sync cycle polls in chunks of ≤100 ticket_ids per the pinned contract, with per-chunk transient backoff. Regression test drives 110 active tickets and asserts two batches (100 + 10).
The remaining comments on this commit are the documented re-anchors of earlier fixes (run-progress, claim release, create race, rejected creations, chmod test, and the pre-55b9909 rollback variant).
210 tests green (13 files), typecheck/build/format clean, live smoke RUNTIME_VERIFIED.
Round 7 (Codex @ offpeak.ts:611): each batch status response is now applied only to its own chunk — the previous loop applied every response to the full due list, so tickets from other chunks read as missing and were spuriously re-taken. The 110-ticket regression now also asserts zero spurious retakes after the two-batch poll. The other eight comments on 9ec7ae3 are the documented re-anchors of fixes from earlier rounds (incl. the permanent admission failure at bridge.ts:1503). 210 tests green, all checks pass.
Round 8 (Codex @ 83ce58e): dispatch verifies the bound session's identity before reusing a thread (a fork/rebound thread fails the task permanently instead of running the prompt inside the replacement session), and settle no longer releases dispatcher-owned children while native background work is active (both off-peak and automation branches). Regressions: rebind → permanent failed without any send; background-job run keeps the child open after settle. 212 tests green, all checks pass. Also verified the plugin runs under the auto-updated bb 0.47.1 (engine >=0.46): provider registered, model catalog with 1M windows, active sessions.
Codex P2 review round 9: a scheduled or idle-time task whose prompt reads
like a plugin management command (e.g. "/zcode-tasks") entered send()'s
local-command branch, which finishes a standalone timeline and returns
without ever submitting a native turn. The off-peak dispatcher had
already persisted admission, so the task stayed running forever with its
service claim and concurrency slot held; two such tasks blocked all
later off-peak dispatches. For automations the same path stranded the
run marker and never reported the run outcome.
Local command interception is a user-composer affordance: dispatches now
always submit their prompt to the native side as task data. Regressions
for both dispatchers (both fail against the unguarded interception).
Round 9 (Codex @ bridge.ts:1478): dispatched prompts no longer enter the local command-interception branch — send() skips it whenever automationId or offPeakExecution is set, so a task whose prompt reads like a management command (e.g. /zcode-tasks) is submitted to the native side as task data instead of stranding the run with admission persisted. Regressions for both dispatchers (off-peak store completes; automation run recorded and child released) — both fail against the unguarded interception. 214 tests green.
Codex P2 review round 10: while a status poll for ticket A was in
flight, a 3102 expiry requeue could replace the task's ticket with B;
the delayed A response was then applied to the task unconditionally,
marking the replacement schedulable before the gateway granted capacity
(reproduced by codex as an unschedulable-to-dispatchable flip from a
stale response alone), and a stale expired/not_found entry re-took yet
another ticket.
applyTicketStatuses now applies a response (including the nextPoll
advance) only when the stored task still holds the polled ticket, and
retake verifies the stored ticket before consuming a new one plus
conditionally after the take, so a replacement landing mid-take is left
in place rather than overwritten. Regression reproduces the interleaving
with a gated in-flight poll; it fails against the unguarded apply.
Round 10 (Codex @ offpeak.ts:635): status responses are now applied only to the ticket they were polled for — applyTicketStatuses checks the stored serverTicketId before applying ready/active state (or advancing the poll), and retake re-verifies the stored ticket before consuming a new one and applies the take conditionally, so a replacement landing mid-take is never overwritten. Regression gates the in-flight poll and expires the run underneath it; it fails against the unguarded apply (verified). 215 tests green. @codex review
Codex P2 review round 11: a task whose initial prompt is exactly
"/compact" still selected send()'s native session/compact branch, which
drops the entire off-peak payload (ticket auth, idle-plan model
selection, task identity) while dispatch persists admission - the run
settles as a plain compaction, not a ticket-bound execution. The
compact branch is now gated on the absence of automationId and
offPeakExecution, mirroring the round 9 management-command gate.
Regression asserts the prompt reaches session/send with the execution
block and never session/compact; it fails against the unguarded branch.
Round 11 (Codex @ bridge.ts): the /compact special branch is now gated on the absence of automationId/offPeakExecution, mirroring the round 9 management-command gate — a dispatched "/compact" reaches session/send with the full execution block (ticket auth, idle-plan selection, task identity) instead of a plain session/compact. Regression asserts the send payload and absence of session/compact; fails against the unguarded branch (verified). 216 tests green. @codex review

What
Completes roadmap stage 6 by hosting ZCode's native idle-time (off-peak) tasks inside the plugin, behind a new
offPeakTasksEnabledsetting (default off).Unlike scheduled tasks (v0.10.x, local store), the off-peak queue lives on the Z.ai server: creating a task takes a ticket, the plugin polls its status, and a ready ticket authorizes an unattended run through the plan's hidden idle-time model. Runs stream into the creating bb thread.
Implementation
src/offpeak.ts— wire client for the ticket gateway (/api/v1/off-peak: take / batch status / settle) with double auth (desktop JWT + individual Coding Plan API key — both already read byCodingPlanHost, which also enforces the individual-plan-only support matrix); workspace-scopedoffpeak.jsonstore (separate from automations, mirroring the native domain separation); upstream create-failure classification (3101 eligibility, 3103 quota, session-bound guard before spending quota); server-directed polling with clamped intervals; settle outbox with retry; FIFO claims with transient backoff (30s→15min) and 3-strike terminal failures.modelSelectiononaccount:{family}-offpeak-idle-plan,modelExecution.requestAuthcarrying the JWT/key/ticket headers (key finding: per-run auth crosses viasession/send, no reverse-RPC needed),toolDenylist: [CronCreate, OffPeakCreate],offPeakRunTypeinit/resume. A mid-run window expiry (3102) requeues, re-takes a ticket and continues the same session with the native continuation prompt.offPeakToolEnabled: truepassed at native create/resume when enabled (registersOffPeakCreate/OffPeakList); reverse RPCs answered workspace-scoped;/zcode-offpeakand/zcode-offpeak-cancel <id>commands.knowledge/contracts/off-peak-protocol.md(draft until live-gateway verification).Verification
modelExecutionblock asserted, and the 3102 → continuation loop.npm run checkgreen;npm run test:livereportsRUNTIME_VERIFIED.draftuntil then.v1 limits (documented)
Tasks need an explicit
modelat creation; pause/continue not exposed (cancel only); BigModel Team identity headers out of scope (individual plans only, as everywhere in this plugin).🤖 Generated with ZCode
