In "Add a runner" you can now choose how the other Mac reaches this one, and Tailscale is one of the choices. With Tailscale selected, the install command downloads and pairs over the Tailscale IP, so the two Macs don't need to share a home network. Typecheck passes, the 91 runner tests pass (two new ones included), and I tried the dialog on a dev build.

Why it didn't work before: your Tailscale address was already passed along, but the "Install from this Mac" command always downloaded from the first local IP (192.168.68.56 in your screenshot). A Mac reachable only over Tailscale therefore couldn't run it.

What changed:

  • New step 2, "How it reaches this Mac": one card per address of this Mac, each with its IP.
    • Same network: Wi-Fi or Ethernet, with the interface name (en0).
    • Virtual machine: the VM bridge address (bridge100), for a runner in one of your macOS VMs.
    • Tailscale: the IP and MagicDNS name. On your Mac it found 100.112.147.65 / mbpvd-n.tailb8ef5.ts.net.
  • Tailscale note: choosing Tailscale adds a line saying the other Mac needs Tailscale signed in to the same account (codext.de).
  • Tailscale not connected: the card is greyed out with the reason, a "Get Tailscale" button and "Check again".
  • Install command: it is rebuilt for the network you pick. The waiting line then reads "Waiting for the runner on 100.112.147.65:… through Tailscale".
  • Remembered choice: the next "Add runner" starts on the network you used last time.
  • Faster first connection: after pairing, this Mac tries the runner first on the address the pairing request came from. When you paired over Tailscale, it doesn't wait on a home IP that can't be reached.
  • Runners you already paired: the runner card shows a small "Tailscale" tag when it connects that way. Under Addresses there is a "Try it first" button that moves its Tailscale address to the top.
  • Clearer error: when the other Mac can't reach this one, the message now says both need the same network or Tailscale on the same account.

What you should check:

  • The "Install from this Mac" tab with Tailscale: I couldn't see it running, because the dev build can only show the godmode.codext.de command. The per-network command is a small change and the core tests cover it. After the next desktop reinstall, pick Tailscale and check that the command starts with curl -fsS http://100.x.x.x:….
  • A real pairing over Tailscale: that needs a second Mac, so I haven't done one.
  • Not pushed: Godmode commits the work to godmode/12-tailscale-for-runner. main hasn't changed since the branch started, so there are no conflicts.
