Summary

Add plz-quiz, a skill that turns supplied study material into quizzes and explains each result with a locator back to the source.

  • Two modes. Learning mode grades each answer when it is checked. Check mode withholds correctness, answers, explanations, and scores until the set is submitted.
  • Honest scoring. Choice and OX items are scored automatically. Short answers are compared with a reference answer and self-checked, and they stay out of the automatic score. Skipped, unanswered, and assisted items are reported separately. Retries and whole-set practice rounds keep the first score.
  • Offline HTML template (assets/quiz-template.html): a single file with no build step, no network requests, and no persistence. The agent replaces the embedded JSON with questions grounded in the user's material.

Template design

The template is designed as a workbook the learner grades, and each ink has one role:

  • Blue marks the learner's own answers and actions, including self-checked short answers.
  • Red marks grading: a circle around the correct option and a slash through a wrong pick, each with a "Your answer" or "Correct answer" tag. Circle and slash are used instead of ✓/✗ because ✓ means "wrong" in Japan.
  • A highlighter marks the source excerpt under each explanation.

Question prompts use an exam-paper serif, and the UI uses a sans-serif. An answer-sheet strip in the top bar shows progress, lets check mode jump between questions, and becomes the graded summary on the results screen. The page supports dark mode, and every text pair measures at least 4.5:1 contrast in both schemes.

The design follows patterns from quiz products and feedback research:

  • Feedback appears below the options and does not cover the submitted choice.
  • The answer and the correct answer are labeled on the options themselves.
  • Verdicts use shape and text, not color alone.
  • Continue, retry, and explanation are separate actions.

references/web-quiz-design.md documents the tokens, typography, layout, and state contract, and references/template-api.md documents the data contract.

The skill and the template run only repository-local commands for verification (node --test scripts/check-quiz-template.test.mjs, optionally with QUIZ_TEMPLATE_PATH). They add no external URLs.

How I verified it

  • node --test scripts/check-quiz-template.test.mjs: 21/21 pass. The suite covers feedback timing in both modes, no spoilers in the DOM before submission, answer-sheet states, option tags, partial submission, assisted and self-check buckets summing to the total, draft preservation on skip, retries and practice rounds keeping the first score, colliding author IDs, case-insensitive lang, no horizontal overflow at 375px, a single short-answer label, malformed data, and study text rendered as text with no external requests.
  • node --test scripts/*.test.mjs: 95/95 pass. One full run on a heavily loaded machine (load average about 21) failed one or two check-3d-loading tests on GPU geometry counts. Those tests passed 45/45 on a rerun, on a clean origin/main worktree, and on a clean worktree with this change applied. This change does not touch the 3D skill.
  • node scripts/check-readme-translations.mjs and node scripts/check-templates.mjs pass.
  • Reviewed screenshots at 1440, 768, and 390px, plus dark mode, for the start screen, a question with a selection, wrong and correct feedback, short-answer self-check, the check-mode sheet, the incomplete prompt, and results.
  • Ran a code review and a security review of the template's DOM sinks. No HIGH or MEDIUM security findings: study data reaches the DOM only through textContent, text nodes, or fixed attribute names, and source.url is limited to http(s). The review found that the data-block comment had lost its < escape guidance, and that is fixed.

Not verified: 200% zoom, a real screen reader, and Japanese and Chinese rendering (their :lang() font stacks are written but not visually checked).

Known follow-ups:

  • In learning mode, opening the incomplete prompt from an ungraded last question still shows that question's "Check answer" beside the prompt's "Continue".
  • skills/plz-quiz/README.ko.md describes the modes as 학습 / 학습 확인, while the template now labels them 풀 때마다 채점 / 다 풀고 채점.

Checklist

  • node scripts/check-readme-translations.mjs passes (or I only changed things it does not cover)
  • If I changed ENGINE in template.html, I applied the same change to example-agent-sandbox.html, and node scripts/check-templates.mjs passes — no 3D ENGINE changes
  • If I added a UI_TEXT key, I added it for en, ko, ja, and zh-CN, and node scripts/check-templates.mjs passes — no 3D UI_TEXT changes
  • I did not commit references/preferences.md, generated pages, or verification screenshots
  • I added no new external URLs or shell commands, or I explained them in the summary above
  • If this is a new skill, I understand that maintainers may add the translations to my branch, and I enabled "Allow edits by maintainers" — all four languages are included

Add plz-quiz, which turns supplied study material into quizzes with
source-backed explanations. Learning mode grades each answer as it is
checked; check mode withholds feedback until the set is submitted.

The bundled offline HTML template is designed as a workbook the learner
grades: blue marks the learner's answers, red marks grading, and a
highlighter marks the source evidence. An answer-sheet strip shows
progress, lets check mode jump between questions, and becomes the graded
summary on the results screen.

Short answers are compared with a reference answer and self-checked
rather than auto-graded, assisted items stay out of the score, and
practice rounds keep the first score. scripts/check-quiz-template.test.mjs
covers feedback timing, scoring, retries, narrow-screen overflow, and
rendering study text as text.

Possibly related issues

  • codekongdev/plz#34: The PR adds document-based quizzes, learning and check modes, source-based explanations, and retries. These match the issue’s stated objectives. The summaries do not verify every acceptance item.
  • codekongdev/plz#35: The new plz-quiz READMEs add installation instructions and first-use examples. They do not cover all prerequisites, installation checks, and troubleshooting requested by the issue.
Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 5d57f

The offline quiz workflow has no established material merge-blocking issue.

Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to 5d57f

The reviewed quiz implementation keeps session data local, validates questions before starting, and renders study passages as text. Safe embedding is explicitly required, and the page is clearly scoped as a learning workbook rather than a secure examination system. No material security issue was identified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected application-level exposure is the generated quiz page, its embedded study excerpts, and its live session responses. The reviewed flow introduces no service identity, API credential, or shared learner datastore.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The critical producer boundary is HTML parsing before JSON validation: an unescaped closing script sequence in source text could escape the data element. The documented serializer escapes every literal less-than character, and the test loader applies that rule. Runtime validation cannot repair an incorrectly serialized HTML document; no such violating generated artifact was supplied.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — After parsing, supplied content is assigned through textContent or text nodes rather than HTML construction. Source URLs are validated as HTTP(S) and rendered as links with noopener and noreferrer, preventing executable URL schemes and opener inheritance through this path.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Initialization failures replace the quiz with a visible error screen rather than starting with invalid data. Recovery remains limited to the live page lifetime: durable recovery is explicitly excluded, and the initialization catch does not establish transactional recovery for later event-handler failures.

- Wait for an explicit submission before grading check mode. In
  one-at-a-time delivery, answering the last item now leads to a neutral
  prompt to submit or revise instead of immediate feedback.
- Make answer-sheet cells 44x44px with 8px between them. On narrow
  screens the top-bar strip stays one row and scrolls horizontally,
  keeping the current cell in view.
- Use count-neutral English labels so a count of 1 reads correctly.
- Let the 375px overflow test answer a short-answer first question, so
  it works against generated quizzes through QUIZ_TEMPLATE_PATH.

The design guide requires at least 8px between answer-sheet cells, but
wrapped rows had only 4px of vertical space.

507-558: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Cover the vertical gap between wrapped answer-sheet rows.

The fixture has four questions, so the 390px results sheet does not wrap. assertTargets also skips every row transition. Reverting the template to gap: 4px 8px would therefore pass these tests while violating the required 8px vertical gap.

Use a generated set large enough to wrap the results sheet and assert the vertical gap at row transitions.

Suggested fix

 function assertTargets(boxes, label) {
   for (const box of boxes) assert.ok(box.width >= 44 && box.height >= 44, `${label}: cell ${box.width}x${box.height}`);
   for (let index = 1; index < boxes.length; index++) {
-    if (Math.abs(boxes[index].top - boxes[index - 1].top) > 1) continue;
-    assert.ok(boxes[index].left - boxes[index - 1].right >= 8 - 0.01, `${label}: gap ${boxes[index].left - boxes[index - 1].right}`);

Update assertTargets to check an 8px minimum vertical gap between consecutive

questions to make the narrow results sheet wrap, so the row-transition assertion
is exercised.

Opening the incomplete prompt from an ungraded last question showed the
question's "Check answer" beside the prompt's "Keep answering". The
question's actions now hide while the prompt is open, as in check mode,
and return when the learner keeps answering.

Also test the 8px spacing between wrapped answer-sheet rows. The previous
fixture never wrapped, so a 4px row gap still passed.
