[Bug]: Videos don't load #72

Description

@f6n73j

Bug report

When loading videos from certain creators, the videos give an error:

Cannot invoke "com.grack.nanojson.JsonObject.getObject(String)" because "this.playerResponse" is null

Context

  • User: admin
  • Route: watch?v=8KtnrtHRiCg
  • Video: Animal Learning for Toddlers with Ms Rachel - 3 Full Episodes - Learn Animal Sounds - Best Videos
  • Browser language: English
  • User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/137.0.0.0 Safari/537.36

  • Crash logs: None — server logs only show method=GET path=/streams status=422 with no stack trace at INFO level.

Player state

{}

Additional notes

  • Video plays fine on FreeTube, so its probably not not geo-restricted or age-gated
  • Certain other videos load and play correctly — issue is isolated to specific videos/creators
  • Self-hosted instance on LAN, accessed via NPM reverse proxy
  • TypeType version: latest as of June 13, 2026 (pulled via docker compose pull)
  • Tested multiple other videos from different channels they work fine
  • No pattern identified yet in which videos fail vs succeed

    Thanks a lot for the report! :)

    I spent some time digging into this video, and it helped uncover what is actually going on.

    First good news: the ugly internal playerResponse is null error should not be shown like that. I opened an upstream PipePipeExtractor PR to make this failure clearer and more useful:

    InfinityLoop1308/PipePipeExtractor#71

    Small context on how TypeType works: TypeType is built around PipePipeExtractor for extraction on purpose. So when something breaks at the extractor level, I prefer fixing or improving it upstream instead of hiding the problem only in TypeType. It is better for everyone: TypeType users benefit from it, and PipePipe / PipePipeExtractor users benefit from it too :)

    For this specific video, the bad news is that the real playback problem is not fully fixed yet. It looks related to YouTube's Made for Kids / COPPA handling. Right now, the only practical workaround seems to be logging in to YouTube.

    TypeType does not support YouTube login yet, but I do want to add support for it in the near future. That should help with this kind of video.

    There is also bigger upstream work happening around SABR support, which may help with this whole class of issues later:

    InfinityLoop1308/PipePipeExtractor#69

    So for now:

    • ugly internal error: upstream PR opened :)
    • anonymous playback for this video: still not solved yet
    • current workaround: YouTube login, not supported in TypeType yet
    • future plan: add login support to TypeType

    Thanks again for reporting this! It was a very useful bug report and helped narrow down the real issue.

    So I'm going to close this issue for now, but don't worry, it will be fixed in the future and I'll update you here when it is.

    Unfortunately, I can't implement the fix right now :(
