Three bugs on main are fixed here. Each one has its own commit and regression test:

  1. A ChatClient that only watches a thread (a second tab with live: true) now returns to ready after every run. Before, it stayed streaming after the second run.
  2. Chat Completions adapters now skip a stream chunk that has no choices field. Before, the run failed with Cannot read properties of undefined (reading '0').
  3. fakeText now stops on request.signal, the abort signal that chat() passes to adapters.

The bugs come from the findings list on #1555 (B11, N5, N8). All three also happen on main.

🎯 Changes

  • packages/ai, stream processor: when a run starts and no other run is active, the processor clears its "stream end sent" flag. Each run then gets its own onStreamEnd.
  • packages/openai-base, Chat Completions: both stream loops read chunk.choices?.[0]. The usage-only check also counts a missing choices field.
  • The extractReasoning overrides in ai-openai/compatible, ai-groq, ai-llmgateway and ai-byteplus run before the base guard. They now read chunk.choices?.[0]?.delta too.
  • packages/ai, fakeText: reads options.request?.signal, then falls back to options.abortController?.signal.
  • No docs change. These are bug fixes, and no docs page describes the old behavior.

✅ Checklist

  • I have followed the steps in the Contributing guide.
  • I have tested code changes locally with pnpm run test:pr, or these tests do not apply to this pull request.
  • I fully understand the code in this pull request, including any code generated with AI assistance.
  • Docs: I updated docs/ for this change, or this change is not user-facing.
  • Changeset: I added a changeset (pnpm changeset), or this PR does not change a published package.

🚀 Release Impact

  • This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
  • This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).

Root cause

1. Watcher stays streaming

Issue. A ChatClient that subscribes but never sends sees two runs end. After the second run, getStatus() is still streaming, although getSessionGenerating() is false. A Stop button or typing indicator that reads the status then stays on in every tab except the sender's.
Cause. StreamProcessor.finalizeStream() sends onStreamEnd only while streamEndEmitted is false. Only resetStreamState() clears that flag, and only a send calls it. The client moves to ready only on onStreamEnd. The next run's first message moves it back to streaming, and nothing moves it out again.
Fix. handleRunStartedEvent clears streamEndEmitted when a run starts and no other run is active.

2. Chunk with no choices

Issue. Some gateways send the usage trailer without a choices field. The run then ends in RUN_ERROR with a TypeError.
Cause. The log line in both stream loops of OpenAIBaseChatCompletionsTextAdapter reads chunk.choices[0] before the if (!choice) continue guard. The extractReasoning overrides of four subclasses do the same, and they run first.
Fix. Every one of these reads now uses chunk.choices?.[0].

3. fakeText ignores the run's signal

Issue. A fakeText with tokensPerSecond keeps streaming after a cancel.
Cause. fakeText.chatStream reads options.abortController. chat() never passes that field to adapters. It passes the signal as request.signal.
Fix. fakeText reads request.signal first.

Possible alternatives

  • Watcher: end the stream on every terminal RUN_FINISHED. This is more code in the client and would duplicate the processor's own end logic. The flag reset is one line in the place that owns the flag.
  • Watcher: call resetStreamState() on every RUN_STARTED. This clears message state in the middle of a send, for example between a tool call and the continuation. It breaks more than it fixes.
  • No choices: rewrite the chunk to choices: [] in a fetch wrapper. ai-cloudflare does this already. It only covers adapters that use the wrapper, and it adds a parse step to every chunk.

Testing

Commands run

  • pnpm test:pr: passes for 102 projects (test:sherif, test:knip, test:docs, test:kiira, test:oxlint, test:lib, test:types, test:build, build).
  • E2E: pnpm --filter @tanstack/ai-e2e test:e2e --grep "only watches|no choices field|fakeText" gives 3 passed.
  • Gate 1 (from bugfix-pr): I wrote each repro and ran it on clean main (5bd27f2), then on this branch.

Unit tests on main, before the fix:

× stops streaming when the request signal chat() passes aborts
AssertionError: expected [ 'abcd', 'efgh', 'ijkl' ] to deeply equal [ 'abcd' ]
× skips a usage-only chunk that has no choices field at all (chatStream)
AssertionError: expected { type: 'RUN_ERROR', …(7) } to be undefined
× skips a usage-only chunk that has no choices field at all (structuredOutputStream)
AssertionError: expected { type: 'RUN_ERROR', …(6) } to be undefined
× skips a usage chunk that has no choices field (openaiCompatible)
AssertionError: expected { type: 'RUN_ERROR', …(7) } to be undefined
× returns a client that only watches to ready after each run ends
AssertionError: expected 'streaming' to be 'ready'

Unit tests on this branch: all of them pass.

E2E with the processor and openai-base fixes reverted, then with them in place:

✘ tests/chat-completions-incomplete-stream.spec.ts › Chat Completions skips a usage chunk that has no choices field
✘ tests/chat-client-watcher-status.spec.ts › a ChatClient that only watches returns to ready after every run
    Expected: "ready" Received: "streaming"
---
✓ tests/chat-completions-incomplete-stream.spec.ts › Chat Completions skips a usage chunk that has no choices field
✓ tests/chat-client-watcher-status.spec.ts › a ChatClient that only watches returns to ready after every run

Manual test

  1. On main, run pnpm --filter @tanstack/ai-e2e test:e2e --grep "only watches". It fails: the status stays streaming.
  2. On this branch, run the same command. It passes.
  3. Open /chat-client-watcher-status in the E2E app and click "Run in another tab" twice. The status shows ready after each run.

How this PR makes testing easy

  • The new unit tests are in ai-client, ai, openai-base and ai-openai.
  • E2E: a new chat-client-watcher-status route and spec, and a no-choices scenario on the existing Chat Completions route.
  • The fakeText fix has a unit test only. chat() stops reading the adapter stream when the run aborts, so the bug cannot be seen through chat(). It can only be seen by code that reads the adapter stream directly, such as a harness.

Risk / rollback

  • Watcher fix: a server that sends several runs in sequence over one connection now gets onFinish once per run, not once per connection. A subscription that replays the history of past runs does the same. The status still ends at ready.
  • Other two fixes: low risk. They only add optional reads.
  • Rollback: revert the commit for the fix you want to undo. Each fix is in its own commit.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Chat Completions streams now handle usage-only chunks without choices, preserving token usage, finish details, and structured responses without causing errors.
    • Watched chats return to a ready state after each run.
    • Fake text streams stop when the request is cancelled, including when cancellation is passed through the request signal.

A client that only subscribes never resets its stream processor between
runs, so onStreamEnd fired for the first run only and the client stayed
'streaming' after the second. A run that starts with no other run active
now owes its own stream end.
Some gateways send the usage trailer without 'choices'. The log line read
chunk.choices[0] before the adapter's own guard, so the run failed with a
TypeError. Both stream paths now read choices optionally.
chat() passes the run's signal as request.signal, but fakeText read only
abortController, so a paced fake kept streaming after a cancel.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

This pull request updates Chat Completions adapters to handle stream chunks without choices, changes fake-text cancellation to use request.signal when available, and resets watcher stream-end tracking for consecutive runs. It adds unit and end-to-end tests for these changes.

Changes

Choice-less stream chunks

Layer / File(s) Summary
Handle missing choices in adapters
packages/openai-base/src/adapters/chat-completions-text.ts, packages/ai-{byteplus,groq,llmgateway}/src/adapters/text.ts, packages/ai-openai/src/compatible/adapter.ts
Adapters now access the first choice optionally. Chat Completions streaming skips choice-specific processing when a chunk has no choice.
Validate choice-less stream handling
packages/openai-base/tests/*, packages/ai-openai/tests/compatible-reasoning.test.ts, testing/e2e/src/routes/api.chat-completions-incomplete-stream.ts, testing/e2e/tests/chat-completions-incomplete-stream.spec.ts, .changeset/chat-completions-missing-choices.md
Tests cover usage-only chunks without choices, including regular and structured-output streams. The end-to-end mock and test cover a usage trailer without choices. A changeset records patch releases.

Fake-text cancellation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Use the request signal for fake-text streams
packages/ai/src/testing/fake-text.ts, packages/ai/tests/fake-text.test.ts, .changeset/fake-text-request-signal.md
FakeTextAdapter.chatStream prefers options.request.signal and falls back to options.abortController.signal. A test covers cancellation through the request signal.

Watcher status after consecutive runs

Layer / File(s) Summary
Reset stream-end tracking for new runs
packages/ai/src/activities/chat/stream/processor.ts, packages/ai-client/tests/chat-client.test.ts, .changeset/watcher-status-ready.md
The processor resets streamEndEmitted when a run starts and no other runs are active. A subscription test checks the result after two runs.
Exercise watcher status in the e2e app
testing/e2e/src/routes/chat-client-watcher-status.tsx, testing/e2e/src/routeTree.gen.ts, testing/e2e/tests/chat-client-watcher-status.spec.ts
A new route queues run events for a watched thread. The end-to-end test checks that the answer count advances and status returns to ready after each of two runs.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Reset hasError for a new independent run.

If a watched run emits RUN_ERROR, hasError remains true. A later run resets streamEndEmitted, but finalizeStream() still suppresses onStreamEnd. The watcher cannot return to ready through that callback.

Reset the error state with the stream-end state when no run is active, and add a regression test for an error followed by a successful run.
