feat(ai): never run a tool call cut at the output limit, add chat({ truncatedToolResult }) - #1717
AlemTuzlak wants to merge 2 commits into
Conversation
…it, add chat({ truncatedToolResult })
- Assistant messages keep metadata.tanstack.finishReason.
- A tool call of an answer that stopped at the output limit (finish reason
length) never runs and asks for nothing. A stored cut call gets an error
tool result, and a history call of a length message is skipped. The
client processor runs no client tool after a length finish.
- chat({ truncatedToolResult }) gives each cut call that text and calls the
model again.
Split out of #1555.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to Length-finished tool calls are suppressed or receive configured error results rather than being dispatched. The reported cross-run path is prevented, and no actionable current-head risk remains beyond normal checks. Pre-merge checks ·

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
A throwing truncatedToolResult callback fails the run without a clear error.
closeTruncatedToolCalls calls the user callback with no try/catch. It runs inside addAssistantToolCallMessage and inside addTerminalAssistantMessages, and the terminal path runs from runTerminalHook. If the callback throws, the error comes out of the terminal hook as a generic run failure. Two things can happen. onFinish can fail after the stream already finished. The tool-call message can be added to the transcript without its tool results. The same happens if the callback returns a non-string value from JS. Catch the error and use TRUNCATED_TOOL_RESULT as the result text.
Proposed fix
- const text =
- typeof option === 'function'
- ? option({ toolCallId: call.id, toolName: call.function.name })
- : (option ?? TRUNCATED_TOOL_RESULT)
+ let text = TRUNCATED_TOOL_RESULT
+ try {
+ const value =
+ typeof option === 'function'
+ ? option({ toolCallId: call.id, toolName: call.function.name })
+ : option
+ if (typeof value === 'string') text = value
+ } catch (error) {
+ this.logger.errors('truncatedToolResult failed', { error })

…xpect finishReason in the persistence E2E Move the length guard into handlePendingToolCalls so the processor still warns 'Did not run tool call'. The sandbox persistence E2E now expects metadata.tanstack.finishReason on the saved assistant message.

When a model answer stops at the output limit (finish reason
length) in the middle of a tool call,chat()no longer runs that call. The newchat({ truncatedToolResult })option gives each cut call an error result with your text, then calls the model again so it can send the call with complete input. Split out of #1555 (core@tanstack/aipart only).🎯 Changes
chat()stores keepsmetadata.tanstack.finishReason.lengthanswer never runs. It asks for no approval. The client stream processor runs no client tool after alengthfinish. It logsDid not run tool call <id>instead.chat()stores a cut answer that keeps its calls (for example, split by a provider-executed tool), each call gets an error tool result with a default text. A history call of alengthmessage with no result is skipped.truncatedToolResultoption (string, or a function of{ toolCallId, toolName }). With it, the cut calls get that text, the model is called again (one loop iteration), and the publicRUN_FINISHEDof that call saystool_callsso the client keeps the stream open.chat()saves now havefinishReasoninmetadata.tanstack. The persistence E2E expectation (sandbox-file-persistence.spec.ts) is updated for this.docs/chat/agentic-cycle.md, and the option indocs/api/ai.md.@tanstack/aiminor.Left out from #1555: everything harness-side (

Behavior change: an app that relied on a cut tool call running (with possibly incomplete JSON input) now sees no run. The default stored result text tells the model the call did not run. Revert the PR to undo.
