Gate HID recovery on a dead-handle signal, not the error prefix.

with_recovery runs for every open-device report operation whose error starts with "could not ". The report methods add that prefix to all underlying HID write and read errors. A healthy device can therefore trigger close, reader joins, re-enumeration, descriptor inspection, reopen, and a retry. This can add latency and lose input reports during reader downtime.

Use a typed error or explicit dead-handle signal. Recover only for that signal. Do not use readers_died() as the sole check because report commands can run without an active listener. Return ordinary report-operation errors without closing and reopening the device.

Update with_recovery to trigger recover only when the report operation provides
a typed error or explicit signal that the HID handle is dead. Return ordinary
read and write errors unchanged without closing, reopening, or retrying the
device; do not use readers_died() as the sole recovery check.

Drop stale candidates for unopened devices on resume.

If a listed device was not open during resume, its identity can remain in device_keys while its native paths change. The next list then reuses the cached Candidate instead of calling inspect_candidate, and open can fail on all stale paths without entering recovery. This can persist for the rest of the session when the device remains present.

Retain candidates only for currently open devices. Keep device_keys unchanged so the next list maps the device to the same key and rebuilds its candidate from the refreshed paths.

Do not evict the device mapping while the resume retry loop is still waiting for the device.

handle_resume calls recover up to RESUME_REOPEN_ATTEMPTS times because USB may still be re-enumerating. The device can be absent during the first attempt. In that case recover removes listeners[key], candidates[key], and the device_keys entry.

On the second attempt, the device_keys lookup at Line 739-744 fails with "the selected HID interface is no longer available". That error repeats for every remaining attempt, even after the device returns. The listener is also gone, so readers do not restart.

As a result, the retry loop only works when the device is already present on the first attempt. That is not the slow re-enumeration case the loop was written for. The session also loses the device key, so the next list assigns a new hid-N key and the panel's existing device reference breaks.

Evict only when the caller makes its final decision. Let handle_resume delay eviction until the last attempt.

🐛 Proposed fix

-            self.candidates.remove(key);

In handle_resume:

Update recover and handle_resume so a missing device during an intermediate
resume retry does not remove its listener, candidate, or device-key mapping;
defer that eviction until the final retry attempt, while preserving the existing
cleanup behavior for callers that make a final recovery decision.
