Summary

Bridge kept showing a stale mouse (e.g. PRO SUPERLIGHT 2C) while a different mouse (e.g. DeathAdder V3 wired) was active in the control panel. The tray panel picked its device name from batteries.first() — an accumulated map that never reflects HID session switches, and wired mice never write battery readings at all.

  • src/hid.rs: track devices the control panel holds open per websocket session (open/close/disconnect hooks), expose active_devices() most-recently-opened first, plus a unit test.
  • src/service.rs: new activeDevices field on GET /v1/status ({key, name, vendorId, productId}, additive, camelCase).
  • src/desktop.rs: home view prefers the active HID device, falls back to battery list, then active profile.
  • Reconcile disconnected HID devices against the full inventory, preserving connected devices outside the requested vendor filter.
  • Always label battery readings with their device names to avoid attributing cached charge levels to the active wired mouse.
  • README.md: document activeDevices.

No control-panel or HID-protocol changes needed.

Test plan

  • New unit test active_devices_prefer_the_most_recently_opened_device (recency order, close fallback, session cleanup).
  • Validated on macOS: cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy --locked --all-targets -- -D warnings, and cargo test --locked (43 passed, 3 ignored).
  • Regression test covers unplug cleanup and isolation between sessions sharing device keys. Physical-device switching remains to be verified on hardware.
  • Manual repro from the issue: connect PRO SUPERLIGHT 2C, then plug in DeathAdder V3 wired and select it in the panel; Bridge title should switch.

Fixes #19

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Device status reports currently open devices separately from battery readings, ordered by most recently opened.
    • The home view shows the first active device’s name when available, then falls back to a battery device name or the active profile name.
  • Improvements
    • Battery rows display their device names, including when only one battery is shown.
    • Device status updates as devices are opened, closed, or unplugged.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified that the status endpoint’s activeDevices field lists devices currently held open by the control panel.

Track which HID devices the control panel holds open and expose them
as activeDevices in GET /v1/status (most recently opened first). The
tray panel prefers that over the accumulated battery list, so swapping
mice updates the displayed device immediately — including wired mice
that never report battery.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The bridge tracks currently open HID devices by session and reports them in the status snapshot, ordered by most recent opening. The home view prefers the first active device name over battery and profile device names. CI and release workflows install native HID dependencies with npm ci.

Changes

Active HID device status

Layer / File(s) Summary
Track and reconcile active HID devices
src/hid.rs
The HID layer records device identity and opening order. Reopening updates the order; closing and session teardown remove registry entries. Inventory reconciliation removes devices that are no longer present. Tests cover ordering, cleanup, and session isolation.
Expose active devices in status
src/service.rs
BridgeSnapshot now includes serialized active_devices, populated with device keys, names, and USB vendor and product IDs from the HID layer.
Use active device name
src/desktop.rs, README.md
The home view prefers the first active device name, then the first battery device name, then the active profile device name. Battery rows display each battery device name. The status endpoint documentation describes activeDevices and its ordering.

Native HID dependency installation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Install native HID dependencies
native-hid/package.json, .github/workflows/ci.yml, .github/workflows/release.yml
The keyboard protocol dependency now resolves from the GitHub v1.1.0 tag, with install-script permissions for that tag and a commit. The Windows, macOS, and Linux workflows use npm ci for production dependencies.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 9718c

The status and home view can follow the active HID device, and native HID dependencies install from the lockfile. No material merge-blocking risk remains.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 9718c

The change exposes additional device information through the existing local status endpoint without changing connection or device-control boundaries. No introduced security vulnerability was established, but failure-state reporting and the newly fetched dependency remain incompletely validated.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The status change affects device-use visibility within one running Bridge process, including sessions sharing that process. Separately, the externally sourced dependency enters native-HID packages produced for Windows, macOS and Linux. Its upstream content was not inspected, so commit locking demonstrates reproducible resolution rather than verified dependency safety.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The inspected path does not turn an aggregate status key into cross-session HID authority. WebSocket commands execute against the owning HidSession, and output reports resolve handles through that session's open_devices map. The desktop consumes only the projected name for display. Duplicate public keys therefore establish identity ambiguity, not a demonstrated device-control bypass.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — WebSocket upgrades still reject missing or unapproved Origin headers. HTTP browser reads retain the configured CORS allowlist, and listeners remain loopback-only. CORS is not authentication for direct local clients, so those clients can read the newly added host-wide metadata through the existing status boundary.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Inventory cleanup is based on the full native inventory rather than the requested vendor subset, preventing a filtered scan from retiring a connected device outside that filter. Tests cover normal ordering, close fallback and isolation when sessions share keys. Cleanup depends on successful refresh, and normal teardown evidence does not establish cancellation-safe registry cleanup.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Document activeDevices as host-wide presentation data with session-local, potentially duplicate keys. Any future device-control consumer should require explicit session ownership rather than treating an aggregate key as a capability.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #19 requires status and the home view to follow the active control-panel device, including wired devices, and to avoid displaying stale disconnected battery entries. The PR adds per-session HID tracking, activeDevices, cleanup, and active-device priority. However, home_view() still falls back to the first accumulated battery entry. The available summary does not show filtering of stale or disconnected battery entries. A disconnected entry can therefore remain the displayed device when no active HID device exists.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The HID tracking, status field, home-view selection, battery labels, reconciliation, and README changes support issue #19. The changes also update native-hid/package.json from a local dependency to a GitHub dependency and change CI and release workflows from npm install to npm ci. These dependency and workflow changes do not implement the linked issue's device-status behavior. The excluded native-hid/package-lock.json cannot be assessed, but its exclusion does not establish a connection to issue #19.

Comment thread src/hid.rs
HidSession::list returned before refreshing devices or reconciling the
inventory whenever vendor_ids was empty. A disconnected device could
therefore stay in activeDevices while its WebSocket session remained
open, until some later nonempty list request or explicit close happened
to reconcile it.

Move the empty-filter short-circuit after refresh_devices and
reconcile_inventory so the full inventory is always reconciled, while an
empty filter still returns no devices. Update the inventory-removal test
to drive list(Vec::new()) and assert the stale session is retired.
The Wooting dependency pointed at file:../../../keyboard-protocol, a path
that only exists in a local multi-repo checkout. On CI the file: link
resolved to nothing, leaving a dangling node_modules entry that made the
Windows release artifact job fail while packaging the archive.

Pin the dependency to github:OpenMouse-Project/keyboard-protocol#v1.1.0,
refresh the lockfile, and switch the workflows to npm ci so installs are
deterministic and the lockfile must stay in sync with package.json.

Two fixes pushed to fix/bridge-active-device-status (head now 9718c04):

  1. fix(hid): HidSession::list reconciles the full inventory before the empty vendor-filter early return, so a disconnected device's session is retired even when the filter is empty (addresses the review comment above). The inventory-removal test now exercises list(Vec::new()).

  2. build(native-hid): the Wooting dependency pointed at file:../../../keyboard-protocol, a local-only path. On CI the file: link resolved to nothing, leaving a dangling node_modules/@openmouse/keyboard-protocol entry that made the Windows release-artifact job fail inside Compress-Archive. It is now pinned to github:OpenMouse-Project/keyboard-protocol#v1.1.0 (the tag whose driver API the Bridge calls), the lockfile is refreshed, and the workflows use npm ci so the lockfile must stay in sync.

Note: this same file: dependency is already on main (introduced with the Wooting PR), so main's CI has been red since then; merging this will fix it. Locally: cargo fmt --check and the full cargo test suite pass, and a cold-cache npm ci --prefix native-hid --omit=dev + npm test pass.
