Signed replacement for #215, based directly on current main and containing the full reviewed event change as one verified commit. Includes the follow-up fixes from #218.

Key properties:

  • GitHub reports commit 87547a3 as verified; this PR contains exactly one commit beyond main
  • PyHPC images are built natively for AMD64 and ARM64 in GitHub CI
  • Daint consumes published images; automatic Podman test/start/shell paths cannot build
  • deployment EDFs are published to the generated branch instead of committed
  • nsys/ncu wrappers have two execution branches and Streamer startup uses its native idempotent setup

Live Daint validation on GH200 using the CI-built ARM64 image:

  • 11/11 package tests passed
  • 14/14 notebooks passed
  • direct nsys profile/export passed
  • direct ncu profile/import passed
  • rootless Podman no-build package test passed 11/11

Local validation passed for Bash/Python/Ruff/YAML/Actions linting, all Compose files and Podman transforms, LFS, an 8-tutorial workflow matrix, generated EDFs, and diff checks.

The generated EDF sets `PMIX_MCA_gds=hash` and `PMIX_MCA_psec=native`, which
are the PMIx settings used for clean Slurm MPI runs on Daint.

We need instructions on how to deploy the container for 10 hours and connect to the JupyterLab, nsys, and ncu services from a web browser. Those instructions should mount the checked out repo so students solutions will persist.

I have a feeling we'll need to do SSH port forwarding. Will that cause issues with the responsiveness/interactivity of the nsys/ncu services that use WebRTC?
