LGTM: the fix is small and correct, and the regression test covers both Nemotron-H branches. A human sign-off is still needed because the PR rewrites an existing test.
Needs action:
- Confirm the edit to the existing test is fine.
test_get_model_deepseek_honors_trust_remote_codebecame the parametrizedtest_get_model_selects_bundled_or_builtin_class. Both original DeepSeek cases and their assertion are kept, and dense and MoE Nemotron-H cases were added.
No action needed:
_builtin_config_unavailablerepeats the re-derivation in_resolve_init_config: the same kwargs filtering and the sameAutoConfig.from_pretrainedtry/except. On the built-in path the config is now loaded twice. Optionally, merge them into one helper that returns the built-in config orNone.- The broad
except Exceptionmeans any failure to build the built-in config now switches trusted-remote-code checkpoints to their bundled code. Before, they kept the built-in class with the remote config. That seems the safer behaviour, but it applies to every architecture, not only Nemotron-H. - Under the size budget. No licensing changes.

The dense Nemotron-H incompatibility is raised as
KeyErrorby the Transformers 5.5 configuration path. The currentexcept Exceptionalso catches transient failures from the secondAutoConfig.from_pretrainedcall. That can silently route a supported checkpoint to bundled code.Suggested fix

Done in 077cc3f: the Nemotron-H check now lives in the model plugin (modelopt/torch/models/nemotron_h/mtp.py::prefers_bundled_code, dispatched via modelopt.torch.models.hf like checkpoint_has_mtp), and get_model just calls it. It is also limited to nemotron_h now.

Bot review (bedrock-claude-opus-5-5) — DM the bot to share feedback.
Nudge: the fix now lives in the Nemotron-H plugin and catches only parsing errors, but CodeRabbit's major comment about block types that parse but can't be built has no reply.
Needs action:
- Reply to CodeRabbit's
mtp.py:84comment, either confirming real dense checkpoints only fail at config parsing or adding aMIXER_TYPEScheck. Today a config with a literal"mlp"inlayers_block_typewould parse fine and still pick the MoE-only built-in class. - Human sign-off on the rewritten test.
test_get_model_deepseek_honors_trust_remote_codebecame the parametrizedtest_get_model_selects_bundled_or_builtin_class. Both DeepSeek cases and their assertion are kept. Cases were added for dense Nemotron-H, MoE Nemotron-H and anOSErrorthat must propagate, so the change is justified.
No action needed:
- ✔️ Resolved since the last review: the check moved into the model library (
nemotron_h/mtp.py::prefers_bundled_code, called throughmodels/hf.pythe same way ascheckpoint_has_mtp), it now applies only tonemotron_h, and the broadexcept Exceptionbecame(KeyError, ValueError, TypeError, AttributeError). Hub errors now propagate, and a test covers that. - The design follows the existing
_PLUGINSpattern.nemotron_his the only registered plugin, so the new hook can't hit a missing attribute. - About 45 lines of core logic, well under the size budget. No licensing changes.

Pensieve nudge review using chenhany's profile (revision 5).
Nudge: the unsupported-block regression is resolved, but required repository checks remain unavailable in this snapshot.
Needs action:
- Confirm plugin compatibility and existing utility reuse against the full repository, and verify the regression tests on Transformers 5.5 and a newer supported release.
- Confirm human sign-off on the justified rewrite in
test_example_utils.py; both original DeepSeek cases and their selection assertion remain intact. - Move the local imports identified inline to module scope, or document concrete dependency reasons for keeping them local.
No action needed:
- ✔️ Resolved since earlier reviews: unsupported parsed block types now select bundled code with regression coverage; the compatibility check resides in the model plugin, and unrelated
OSErrorfailures propagate.
Review context was incomplete.
[info] modelopt/torch/models/nemotron_h/mtp.py:90 — The new MIXER_TYPES import is inside prefers_bundled_code without a documented reason requiring a local import. Move it to module scope, or document the concrete optional-dependency or circular-import constraint.
[info] tests/examples/hf_ptq/test_example_utils.py:492 — The previously flagged local import remains without an explanation. Move prefers_bundled_code to module scope, or call the already imported example_utils.prefers_bundled_code.

LGTM: every earlier concern is fixed in the diff, so what's left is a human sign-off on the rewritten existing test.
Needs action:
- Confirm the rewrite of
tests/examples/hf_ptq/test_example_utils.pyis fine.test_get_model_deepseek_honors_trust_remote_codeis now the parametrizedtest_get_model_selects_bundled_or_builtin_class. Both DeepSeek cases and their assertion are unchanged, and dense Nemotron-H, MoE Nemotron-H andOSError-propagation cases were added. The edit follows from the behaviour change.
No action needed:
- ✔️ Resolved since the last review: parsed
layers_block_typeis now checked againstMIXER_TYPES, with a test (CodeRabbit'smtp.py:84comment). The test callsexample_utils.prefers_bundled_codeinstead of a local import. The localMIXER_TYPESimport is kept for an optional dependency, same as the existing one in_NemotronHMTP.__init__. - Design follows the existing
_PLUGINShook pattern used bycheckpoint_has_mtp, and the check applies only tonemotron_h. - The author posted current-head results on Transformers 5.5.4 and 5.12.1, plus selector-only checks on 5.6–5.15. I haven't verified them.
- About 50 lines of core logic, under the budget. No licensing changes.

LGTM: every earlier concern is still fixed at the current head, and nothing new came up. The remaining step is a human sign-off on the rewritten existing test.
Needs action:
- Sign off on the rewrite in
tests/examples/hf_ptq/test_example_utils.py.test_get_model_deepseek_honors_trust_remote_codeis now the parametrizedtest_get_model_selects_bundled_or_builtin_class. No action needed:
- ✔️ Resolved since earlier reviews: the check moved into the plugin as
nemotron_h/mtp.py::prefers_bundled_code, theMIXER_TYPESblock-type check was added with a test, and the exception list was narrowed so Hub errors propagate. The local imports are also sorted out. - The design follows the existing
_PLUGINShook pattern used bycheckpoint_has_mtp. The check is limited tonemotron_h, and thehasattr(transformers, architecture)guard keeps it away from architectures that aren't built in. - The author posted current-head results on Transformers 5.5.4 and 5.12.1, plus selector-only checks on 5.6–5.15. I haven't verified them.

What does this PR do?
Type of change: Bug fix
get_model()picked the built-inNemotronHForCausalLMwhenever Transformers ships one, ignoring--trust_remote_code. On Transformers 5.5 the built-in class implements only the MoE variant, so dense Nemotron-H checkpoints (Nano-9B/12B-v2, H-8B/47B/56B) failed withKeyError: 'mlp'. It now uses the checkpoint's bundled code whentrust_remote_codeis set and its config can't be re-derived as a built-in one. From 5.6 the built-in class handles dense models and nothing changes.Testing
test_get_model_selects_bundled_or_builtin_classcases pass; the dense case fails without the fix.hf_ptq.pyFP8 PTQ of Nano-9B-v2 exports a valid checkpoint (9.4 GB, 120F8_E4M3tensors), single GPU.mamba-ssmtriton kernel).DynamicCachehas nomlplayer type). The bundled path needsmamba-ssm, whose current releases don't import on Transformers 5.x; I used a local shim to test. Before your PR is "Ready for review"
