Still cannot install AI-Toolkit after at least a year #1767
Description
What happened?
I've been using Stability Matrix since at least the beginning of 2025 and it has never been possible to install it. There are always errors. The errors have changed over time but the result is the same. ComfyUI and OneTrainer install without issue.
I have tried to install AI-Toolkit from the list and, again and again from then until now, and it won't install. This has been with OpenSUSE Tumbleweed a year ago, Kubuntu 25.10, and now recent and current Tumbleweed. Three different installations. Two different motherboards. No issues with any other software. (The only other issue I have is that my Corsair "Rugged" 4 TB Thunderbolt drive stopped working after I installed Tumbleweed again. It won't appear for Kubuntu 25.10 anymore either, nor will it appear in Windows 10.) No overclocking. I have continued to update Stability Matrix. I have tried selecting different Python versions when installing. I think I tried different Commit versions from the list, too.
The only thing that might be unusual about my setup is that I have Stability Matrix on external thunderbolt drives (now only one, as the Corsair appears to be a buggy disaster and none of its utilities have worked). However, running Stability Matrix from an external drive doesn't cause issues with the other packages like ComfyUI and OneTrainer.
The only issues I had in the past with Stability Matrix was having Nvidia support files time out when installing ComfyUI. That was apparently a known bug that people were told to manually fix by increasing the time-out number. But I haven't been able to find any workaround posted to the issue of installing AI-Toolkit via Stability Matrix. I keep hoping that, someday, it will become possible to simply install it normally. I do greatly appreciate the existence of Stability Matrix, as it makes dealing with ComfyUI on Linux much simpler.
Hardware: 5090 32 GB, Linux (Two different OpenSUSE Tumbleweed installations, one on a SATA drive and one on an NVME drive, and Kubuntu 25.10 on a SATA drive), 128 MB RAM running at JEDEC, 9800x3D.
The error I posted to the logs portion of this ticket is using Python 3.12.14 and the "main" ecee894 Commit which appears to be the default. As mentioned I tried other Python versions and other Commit versions without success. I don't have the log for the errors I used to get which were quite different. There no mention of a "Dangerous link path" until recently.
Steps to reproduce
- Open Stability Matrix
- Click Add Package
- Go to Training tab
- Click AI-Toolkit

Just in case it's relevant, I checked the date on my surviving AI drive and it shows the oldest version of Stability Matrix I still have (backed up) is from September 2025. So, it is been a bit more than one year rather than "the start of 2025" I put in the original message. Doubt this matters but adding this clarification in case it's somehow relevant. I tried to install AI-Toolkit as soon as I first tried Stability Matrix so it has indeed been a very long time.

Ok I tried to install this today on my machine and get the same errors. So it's not just you.

Quick research shows that 7zip was upgrade this May and that version plays it safe rather than sorry and outright rejects all relative symlinks. Crossing volume boundaries could also be another gotcha. I've pushed a patch to relax the 7zip security for that part of the install.
That said, if you're using an external drive that's formatted as exFAT, you may be out of luck regarding symlinks altogether.
Either way, a workaround in the meantime could be to install StabilityMatrix on your local filesystem and just map the Models directory to your external drive if that's where all the bulk is. The Data folder can also be remapped but I think that runs into these files ending up on the external disk again with the same issue. Although it could be possible to install all locally as a portable install and then move it all over since this is likely just an install-time blocker.

The external drives have been XFS in both cases.
Is there any significant danger of bypassing 7zip's safety protection? mohnjiles' proposed commit seems to indicate that it's not a good idea.
Also, since I have never been able to install AI-Toolkit (I strongly believe there were different errors prior to May) I am wondering if it's a good idea to try to install it with a safety bypass in place. It has always seemed strange that AI-Toolkit is so uniquely difficult to install, now to the point of requiring that 7zip's safety check be bypassed.

Clarification provided by e-nord in development thread. Thank you. I tried to close this as completed but nothing happened so I guess that's up to the maintainers to do. Either that or it's an issue with Ublock Origin.
