Scope

C2 of platform#631 (cumulative ramp sizing). Storage only; nothing calls it yet, so production behavior is unchanged. Refs #631.

  • Migration 000118: nullable purchase_plans.ramp_baseline JSONB, no backfill (tip on main was 000117, re-checked before push).
  • SetPlanRampBaselineTx (insert-if-null, own UPDATE) and GetPlanRampBaselineTx. The column is in neither UpdatePurchasePlanTx's SET list nor CompletePlanStep's path, so a stale plan struct cannot clear it.
  • ListPlanCommittedTx(planID): per recommendation identity, what the plan's executions already hold. Canceled (both spellings), expired and failed with NoSubmission hold nothing; every other status holds (including paused, partially_completed, failed with unknown outcome, and any status added later). Every selected rec of a counted row counts, including errored recs of a partially_completed row, since a rec error can be a timeout after the provider accepted. Within one step the fan-out root row, per-account rows and retry rows carry the same recs, so an identity counts once per step (max), then steps add.
  • Store interface, mock and two test fakes updated.

Open for C3, not decided here: whether a plan edit that changes services or ramp shape clears the baseline (today it is immutable).

Evidence

  • Unit (go test ./internal/config): status-set table, step sum vs same-step dedupe, partial row, hourly commitment.
  • Real Postgres 17.11 (throwaway local cluster, integration tag): TestListPlanCommittedTx_RealRowShapes (fan-out root+accounts, failed+retried, canceled, legacy-canceled, failed with and without NoSubmission, paused, partially_completed), TestPlanRampBaseline_ImmutableAndOutOfFullRowWrites (baseline survives CompletePlanStep, a plan edit and a stale plan save; second write refused), TestMigration_PurchasePlansRampBaseline (no backfill, idempotent up, down).
  • Mutation probes, 9 mutants, all killed: canceled counted, legacy-canceled counted, failed-NoSubmission counted, paused dropped, partially_completed dropped, same-step rows summed, unselected counted, baseline overwrite, baseline added to the full-row UPDATE.
  • Not run: the other migration integration tests that hard-code a container user (harness limitation of the local cluster, unrelated to this change); CI runs them.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Purchase plans can now retain a ramp baseline that remains unchanged as plan steps complete or plans are updated.
    • Committed quantities can be tallied across plan executions, accounting for retries and partial recommendations while excluding canceled, expired, and certain failed executions.
    • Plans without a saved baseline continue to use their existing sizing behavior.

Migration 000118 adds purchase_plans.ramp_baseline (nullable, no backfill).
SetPlanRampBaselineTx freezes it insert-if-null through its own UPDATE; the
plan's full-row UPDATE and CompletePlanStep never name the column.
ListPlanCommittedTx sums what the plan's executions already hold per
recommendation identity: canceled (both spellings), expired and failed with
NoSubmission hold nothing, everything else does, and same-step root,
per-account and retry rows count once.

Nothing calls these yet; the resolver and attach wiring follow separately.

Review in Change Stack →

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds transaction-scoped PostgreSQL storage for purchase-plan ramp baselines and aggregation of quantities committed by plan executions. It also adds a nullable JSONB column, test coverage, and mock implementations.

Changes: Plan ramp ledger

Layer / File(s) Summary
Baseline contract and persistence
internal/config/interfaces.go, internal/config/store_postgres_ramp_baseline.go, internal/database/postgres/migrations/000118_purchase_plans_ramp_baseline.*.sql, internal/database/postgres/migrations/000118_purchase_plans_ramp_baseline_test.go, internal/config/store_postgres_ramp_baseline_integration_test.go, internal/mocks/stores.go, internal/analytics/collector_test.go, internal/server/test_helpers_test.go
Adds PlanRampBaseline and PlanRampQuantity, transaction-scoped store methods, and a nullable ramp_baseline JSONB column. The setter rejects empty baselines and writes only when the baseline is unset. Tests check the migration and baseline persistence behavior. Mocks implement the new store methods.
Committed quantity aggregation
internal/config/store_postgres_ramp_baseline.go, internal/config/store_postgres_ramp_baseline_test.go, internal/config/store_postgres_ramp_baseline_integration_test.go
Adds aggregation of selected recommendation quantities by identity and step. Canceled, expired, and specified failed executions are excluded; duplicate executions for a step use the maximum quantities. Tests cover execution statuses, retries, partial completion, and hourly commitments.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to d33e9

The change appears mergeable with a focused test follow-up. No current production behavior change is identified, but an unequal-quantity test would protect the intended accounting rule.

Gate verdict: CHANGES REQUESTED at 66b8eb8

Blocker (CI red at this SHA)

  • Lint Code fails (run 38479132858): internal/config/store_postgres_ramp_baseline_integration_test.go:110:10: shadow: declaration of "err" shadows declaration at line 105 (govet). The _, err := f.store.SetPlanRampBaselineTx(...) / wrote, err := ... inside the WithTx closures shadows the outer err from GetPurchasePlan. Rename or assign with =. CI Success fails only because of this.

Review (adversarial, against origin/main 74c3234): no code defects found

  • Migration: origin/main tip is 000117; 000118 is unique (only open fix(db): drop the 9-column recommendations natural key index (#806) #821 carries a colliding 000112, not this PR). Head is up to date with main. ADD COLUMN IF NOT EXISTS ramp_baseline JSONB is nullable with no default (metadata-only on a populated table); down uses DROP COLUMN IF EXISTS.
  • Status set (holdsCapacity, store_postgres_ramp_baseline.go:107-116): excludes canceled, legacy cancelled, expired, failed with NoSubmission=true; everything else (pending, notified, approved, scheduled, running, paused, completed, partially_completed, failed NoSubmission=false, unknown) counts. Matches the corrected C2 spec. The only execution status constants are types.go:422-448; no other execution status literal (rejected/revoked belong to registrations and revoke responses) exists.
  • Fan-out/retry: per (identity, step) max across rows, then steps add. Retry rows keep StepNumber (handler_purchases.go:2187); plan-step rows set it (plan_step_attach.go:198,225). Executor buys only Selected recs (execution.go:888-899) and planstep sets Selected=true (resolve.go:224), so the Selected filter does not under-count.
  • Stale-struct overwrite: the only plan writers are INSERT (store_postgres.go:582, no ON CONFLICT), the full-row UPDATE (:823, column list does not name ramp_baseline), last_notification_sent (:873) and DELETE. No SELECT * on purchase_plans.
  • Scoping: all three queries are WHERE id = $1 / WHERE plan_id = $1.

Local verification (git archive of 66b8eb8, GOTOOLCHAIN=go1.26.9, throwaway PostgreSQL 17.11 cluster, testcontainers helper redirected locally, not committed)

  • go build ./..., go vet -tags integration on touched packages: exit 0.
  • go test (unit) for config, database, mocks, server, analytics, purchase, api: exit 0.
  • go test -tags integration ./internal/config/ ./internal/database/postgres/migrations/: config ok; migrations ok (5 TestRunMigrations_* needed a cudly_test role on the local cluster, then passed). TestListPlanCommittedTx_RealRowShapes, TestPlanRampBaseline_ImmutableAndOutOfFullRowWrites, TestMigration_PurchasePlansRampBaseline, TestSumPlanCommitted_* PASS.
  • Mutation probes (20, one run): 17 killed, including every status-filter line, the max-per-step/sum-across-steps, the insert-if-null guard and adding ramp_baseline = NULL to the full-row UPDATE. Survivors (non-blocking follow-ups): M10 cur.Count = max(...) -> cur.Count = q.Count and M13 the same for Hourly (no test has same-step rows with different quantities in an order where last-wins is smaller); M16 q.Count += rec.Count -> = (no row carries two recs with the same identity).

Non-blocking notes for C1/C3

  • The baseline survives a plan edit that changes services or ramp shape. The spec left clear-on-shape-change to review; C3 needs a decision (fail loud vs clear) before it wires the baseline.
  • update_purchase_plans_updated_at (000001:256) bumps updated_at on SetPlanRampBaselineTx, so a C3 caller must not run UpdatePurchasePlanTx with the pre-baseline struct in the same tx (optimistic conflict).

Re-gate needed after the lint fix (new SHA restarts the gate).

Pin the explicit per-step maximum with unequal quantities.

The normal plan-step, account fan-out, and retry paths preserve recommendation counts, so the operator-edit scenario is not supported by the producer flow.

The existing unit and PostgreSQL tests use equal same-step quantities. They already reject summing, but they do not distinguish max from selecting the first or last row. Add a focused test with unequal counts:

Suggested test

+ baselineExec("high", 1, StatusCompleted, high),

Add a focused test for sumPlanCommitted with two completed recommendations for
the same identity and step but unequal counts, and assert the result uses the
larger count. This should distinguish the perStep aggregation’s max behavior
from selecting either the first or last row.

Gate verdict: APPROVED at d33e9a0

  • Delta since the reviewed 66b8eb8 (review in the previous gate comment, no code defects found): git diff 66b8eb8b d33e9a0f touches only internal/config/store_postgres_ramp_baseline_integration_test.go, a test-only rename of the shadowed err to setErr (4 lines). It fixes the earlier Lint Code blocker.
  • origin/main rechecked at merge time: migration tip is still 000117, no 000118 collision, and the head is up to date with main.
  • Local at the exact head (git archive, GOTOOLCHAIN=go1.26.9, throwaway PostgreSQL 17.11 cluster, testcontainers helper redirected locally, not committed): go build ./... and go vet -tags integration exit 0. go test -tags integration ./internal/config/ ./internal/database/postgres/migrations/ passes in both packages, including TestListPlanCommittedTx_RealRowShapes, TestPlanRampBaseline_ImmutableAndOutOfFullRowWrites, TestSumPlanCommitted_* and TestMigration_PurchasePlansRampBaseline. The evidence is fixture-based integration on a real Postgres. Nothing calls these methods yet, so there is no user path to drive.
  • The mutation run from the previous gate stands (17/20 killed). The survivors M10, M13 and M16 are non-blocking follow-ups. The C3 notes (baseline on a services/ramp-shape edit, and the updated_at trigger) carry forward.
  • CI: run 38481678326 is all green (26 pass, Lint Code included), and mergeStateStatus is CLEAN.
