Prevent failed collections during the two-index release window.
If a recommendation changes AZ while its other eight key fields stay the same, this conflict target does not match the existing row. The retained eight-column index then rejects the insert, and UpsertRecommendations rolls back the collection. The previous conflict target would update that row. Ensure no collection can run between the PR2b release and the PR2c index removal, or deploy the changes without that window. PostgreSQL infers arbiter indexes only when their columns exactly match the conflict target. (postgresql.org)

Gate reviewer: confirmed, not fixed in this PR by design. Reproduced on a throwaway PostgreSQL 17: with both unique indexes present, an AZ shift on one 8-tuple (or two AZs on one 8-tuple in a batch) raises 23505 on the retained 8-column index, while the same-AZ re-upsert updates in place. The PR body lists this as the known limitation, and the release runbook removes the window in prod: dispatch the 000109 migration, release PR2b and PR2c together, dispatch the PR2c migration immediately after PR2b is live. The only environment that sees PR2b alone is dev, until PR2c merges (planned right after PR2b reaches dev). The multi-AZ batch case already fails on main today (SQLSTATE 21000), so the only new transient failure is the single-row AZ shift in dev. The reviewed #792 plan (pass-2 amendment B2) sets this ordering.

@cristim Thanks for clarifying the accepted release ordering. The finding is valid, but the dev-only AZ-shift failure is an accepted limitation of this staged rollout. I will not press for a code change in PR #810.
Releasing PR2b and PR2c together limits the production window. Immediate migration dispatch alone does not guarantee that no collection runs before the eight-column index is removed.
The finding remains open because it is not fixed in this PR. Would you like a separate follow-up issue, or is #792 sufficient to track it?

Gate review (Opus 5.5): CHANGES REQUESTED at 671a63bBlocking (reproduced in CI, run 38282132836, Integration Tests): This failure is also the concrete evidence for the rollout risk: PR2b against a schema without 000109 fails every collection write with 42703 (no startup crash; the error surfaces per collection in Verified clean (local, exact head via

Fixed the Integration Tests failure at 4ebb55f: the Azure pricing test now seeds the v105 row with raw SQL and migrates to 109 before the recollect upsert. The test passed against a throwaway local PostgreSQL 17; golangci-lint (go1.26.9, integration tag) is clean. The only other test that pins an old schema (api nullable_purchase_cost, versions 100-101) does not call the recommendations upsert. |

Rollout reminder: prod must apply 000109 before PR2b, release PR2b with PR2c, and dispatch the PR2c migration right after PR2b is live. A schema without 000109 makes every collection write fail with 42703. |
Part of #792 (PR2b). Depends on migration 000109 (#808, merged).
What
insertRecommendationsBatchnow usesON CONFLICT (account_key, provider, service, region, resource_type, engine, term, payment_option, availability_zone), i.e. the 9-columnrecommendations_natural_key_az_idx.availability_zoneis a generated column derived from the payload and is never written. No other ON CONFLICT or natural-key lookups exist on this table (eviction and readers useaccount_key/provider only).Known limitation (resolved by PR2c)
While both the 8-column and 9-column indexes exist, a batch with two zonal rows differing only by AZ, or an AZ shift on one 8-tuple, still violates the 8-column index. PR2c drops the 8-column index and owns the multi-AZ test. This PR asserts only what holds now: same-AZ re-upsert updates in place, regional rows (AZ '') are unchanged, and rows written by pre-PR2b code (AZ only inside
details) are found as the conflict target.Release
Release PR2b and PR2c together. Prod runbook: dispatch
database-migration.ymlfor 000109 first, release PR2b, then immediately dispatch the PR2c migration. Do not merge PR2c before PR2b is deployed to dev.Verification
TestPostgresStore_UpsertRecommendations_AZArbiter(3 subtests) passed against a throwaway local PostgreSQL 17 through a direct connection (testcontainers hangs on this machine); CI runs it with the real container.go test ./internal/configunit suite and golangci-lint (go1.26.9, integration tag) are clean.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
