Refs #35 (stays open: protocol-level search/dedupe is #42).

What

  • Bump all four cloud-commitments-go modules to v0.0.0-20261009134326-8a3d92b9ddae. Deliberate: go main is one commit ahead at cabe6eb, out of scope here.
  • RDS tool schema no longer advertises oracle-se2/sqlserver-ee (the library now refuses them); engine list updated.
  • Regression tests in tools/adopted_go_safeguards_test.go using real library clients behind fakes (no credentials, no network).
  • CHANGELOG entry.

Consumer-visible changes in the pin range 9962786..8a3d92b

  • go#300: RDS exact offering match; Oracle and SQL Server refused before any API call.
  • go#297: EC2/Redshift purchases are single-send; a lost response reports "purchase outcome unknown".
  • go#210: EC2 rejects empty/unknown tenancy and scope. The tool always fills both (default/region) and validates them itself first.
  • go#191: OpenSearch matches reserved offerings exactly.
  • go#263/#264: adopted-commitment flag (PurchaseResult.ExistingCommitment) on re-drives for EC2/GCP/rds/elasticache/memorydb/opensearch/redshift. Checked: nothing in tools/ reads it, PurchaseResponse has no such field, and an adopted re-drive still returns Success=true with the adopted CommitmentID. No shape or success-semantics change, so no extra test.

Fails at the old pin (3a/3b) and pin-insensitive guards (3c/3d)

With go.mod/go.sum from b9ba0cc, go test ./tools -run 'TestRDSPurchase|TestEC2Omitted|TestExecutePurchaseSurfacesOutcome':

--- FAIL: TestRDSPurchaseRefusesLicensedEngineBeforeAnyAPICall
--- FAIL: .../oracle-se2 Error: An error is expected but got nil.
--- FAIL: .../sqlserver-ee Error: An error is expected but got nil.
--- FAIL: TestRDSPurchaseRequiresExactOfferingMatch
--- FAIL: .../aurora-mysql_offering_is_never_bought_for_a_mysql_request Error: An error is expected but got nil.
--- FAIL: .../exact_match_purchases_exactly_that_offering_once Not equal (wrong offering bought)

At the new pin all pass. TestEC2OmittedTenancyAndScopeStillAcceptedByLibrary and TestExecutePurchaseSurfacesOutcomeUnknownVerbatim are pin-insensitive guards (pass at both pins); the latter reproduces the real wording from providers/aws/internal/purchasecfg/outcome.go at 8a3d92b because the package is internal.

Follow-ups

Audit status for outcome-unknown: #49 (needs go#301 sentinel; commented there).

Verification

make build, make lint (0 issues), go test on ./tools, ./cmd/..., . pass. Mocks only; no live cloud calls.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • RDS and OpenSearch purchases now require an exact match for the requested offering. Oracle and SQL Server RDS purchases are rejected.
    • EC2 purchase requests reject empty or unrecognized tenancy and scope values.
    • EC2 and Redshift purchases are sent only once. If a response is lost, the result is reported as unknown rather than automatically retrying.
    • Re-driven purchases that adopt an existing commitment are flagged.
  • Documentation
    • Updated RDS purchase guidance to reflect supported engines.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The PR updates cloud-commitments-go and makes the AWS RDS SDK a direct dependency. It updates the RDS purchase schema and adds regression tests for RDS matching, EC2 tenancy and scope validation, and purchase-error handling. The changelog records additional safeguards and states that the MCP response shape is unchanged.

Changes

Purchase safeguards

Layer / File(s) Summary
Dependency update
go.mod
The cloud-commitments-go package and provider dependencies use a newer pseudo-version. The AWS RDS SDK is now a direct dependency.
RDS contract and safeguard coverage
tools/aws_rds_ri.go, tools/adopted_go_safeguards_test.go, CHANGELOG.md
The RDS engine schema lists supported examples and states that Oracle and SQL Server are refused. Regression tests cover RDS purchase matching, EC2 tenancy and scope validation, and purchase-error handling. The changelog records the update and additional listed safeguards.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 25bbe

The change is mergeable with awareness that the lost-response safeguards are not directly covered by the new test; a regression in either library client could go undetected.

183-186: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Add a library-level lost-response regression test.

This test supplies an error that already says purchase outcome unknown. It does not call the EC2 or Redshift library purchase client. It would still pass if either client retried a purchase or stopped classifying a lost response. Keep this wrapping test, and add a fake AWS purchase API that returns a transport error. Assert one purchase call and the outcome-unknown error through each real library client. The pinned EC2 client applies both safeguards inside PurchaseCommitment. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Gate review (independent, adversarial): APPROVE at 25bbe63

Reviewer did not write this PR. Local runs from git archive 25bbe639 (no branch checkout), GOTOOLCHAIN=go1.26.9 GOWORK=off, macOS arm64. Mocks/fakes only; no live cloud calls.

Plan amendments, checked against the diff

  • Pins: go list -m shows all four cloud-commitments-go modules at v0.0.0-20261009134326-8a3d92b9ddae; every old pin (20261003..20261007) is older, so no downgrade. go mod tidy -diff is clean. The only other go.mod change is service/rds moving from // indirect to direct, required because the new test imports it (same version).
  • Real wording: the test's error text matches providers/aws/internal/purchasecfg/outcome.go:44 at 8a3d92b byte for byte.
  • RDS schema (tools/aws_rds_ri.go:35) no longer lists oracle-se2/sqlserver-ee; no other mention remains outside tests and CHANGELOG.
  • CHANGELOG covers go#300, #297, #210, #191, #263/#264. Body says "Refs fix(deps): adopt reviewed cloud-commitments-go purchase safeguards #35". Follow-up MCP fix(audit): record outcome-unknown purchases with a distinct audit status #49 (p3) is open; go#301 has the sentinel comment.
  • #263/#264: confirmed nothing in tools/ reads ExistingCommitment, and the library's adopted re-drive returns Success=true with the existing ID (e.g. rds/client.go:152-156 at 8a3d92b), so the "no shape change" note is accurate.

Fails-at-old-pin, reproduced (go.mod/go.sum from b9ba0cc, same tests):

--- FAIL: TestRDSPurchaseRefusesLicensedEngineBeforeAnyAPICall/oracle-se2 An error is expected but got nil.
--- FAIL: TestRDSPurchaseRefusesLicensedEngineBeforeAnyAPICall/sqlserver-ee An error is expected but got nil.
--- FAIL: TestRDSPurchaseRequiresExactOfferingMatch/aurora-mysql_offering_is_never_bought_for_a_mysql_request An error is expected but got nil.
--- FAIL: TestRDSPurchaseRequiresExactOfferingMatch/exact_match_purchases_exactly_that_offering_once  expected: []string{"off-mysql"} actual: []string{"off-aurora"}
--- PASS: TestExecutePurchaseSurfacesOutcomeUnknownVerbatim
--- PASS: TestEC2OmittedTenancyAndScopeStillAcceptedByLibrary

At the new pin all four pass; the two pin-insensitive guards are labelled so in the file and the body.

CodeRabbit nitpick (library-level lost-response test), gate evidence instead of a code change: I ran a throwaway probe (not committed) through the real MCP EC2 tool handler with a real ec2.Client over a fake API whose Purchase returns read tcp: connection reset by peer:

  • new pin: purchases=1 retryMaxAttempts=1 err=... failed to purchase EC2 RI: purchase outcome unknown: the request may have been sent and the commitment may exist; reconcile before retrying: read tcp: connection reset by peer
  • old pin: purchases=1 retryMaxAttempts=99 (SDK default untouched) err=... failed to purchase EC2 RI: read tcp: connection reset by peer

So #297 reaches the MCP path. A committed version of that probe would mostly retest go#297, which the go repo covers; non-blocking. Worth folding into the follow-up bump PR if wanted.

Build/test at 25bbe63: go build ./... OK, go vet ./... OK, go test ./... ok (root, cmd/cudly-mcp, tools), golangci-lint run 2.11.4: no issues.

CI: all 13 checks green at 25bbe63 (incl. CI Success, macOS build, integration), mergeStateStatus CLEAN, base main b9ba0cc (not behind). Verdict: clean, merging with --match-head-commit.
