CSV input with missing headers now fails before row processing instead of loading incomplete recommendations. UTF-8 BOM input preserves Service values, invalid UTF-8 bytes are rejected, Count must be at least 1, and EstimatedSavings must be nonnegative. Errors include the CSV position without repeating invalid numeric values.

Refs #1327
Closes #2116

The two issues share the parser and retain separate commits. BREAKING CHANGE (owner decision, item 42): the required CSV columns are now Service, Region, ResourceType, Count, Term and PaymentOption. Existing 4-column CSVs now fail to load with a clear error naming the missing column(s), for example CSV header missing required columns: Term, PaymentOption. Term must be 1yr or 3yr and PaymentOption must be all-upfront, partial-upfront or no-upfront on every row; a blank or unknown value fails with the row number and column. Docs and CHANGELOG updated.

Verification at d75df92, based on 65a02a7:

  • Behavioral failing-first proof: current regression tests with parent parser ad57326 fail for missing headers, BOM Service fidelity, Count zero and negative savings. Encoding tests with pre-guard parser3111dc7d fail for Latin-1 fields and malformed TOTAL rows. Current tests pass.
  • Full GOWORK=off GOTOOLCHAIN=go1.26.6 go test -short -race -count=1 ./...: passed530.548s. No tests in cmd branch on testing.Short.
  • Fresh build, pinned golangci-lint2.10.1 (zero issues), repository gosec and all commit hooks pass.
  • Real macOS CLI dry runs with isolated credential-free environment reject missing legacy headers, zero Count, negative savings and Latin-1 input with exit1 before cloud configuration. No reports or purchase records; startup initializes empty audit logs. These scenarios use temporary CSV fixtures.
  • Independent local review: two passes, findings fixed, no actionables. Rebase range-diff preserves all three patches.

Merge gate remains pending: project requires independent exact claude-opus-5-5 review naming the final SHA. Historical Kimi and current local Codex reviews do not satisfy that model gate; local exact-model runtime reports Not logged in. No merge authorization is inferred from CI or fixture verification.

Follow-up issues filed: none. The Term and PaymentOption validation gap tracked in #379 is addressed by this change.

Note: the verification block above predates the Term and PaymentOption change; the new head needs a fresh gate review and verification.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Changes
    • CSV imports now require Service, Region, ResourceType, Count, Term, and PaymentOption columns. Term and PaymentOption must match supported values; counts must be positive integers, and nonblank savings values must be nonnegative and finite.
    • Imports validate UTF-8, handle a leading BOM in the first header, and report invalid values by row or column without echoing malformed numbers.
    • Older four-column CSV files are no longer accepted. CLI documentation describes the required format and validation.

loadRecommendationsFromCSV silently tolerated headers it did not
recognize: a missing Service/Region/ResourceType column decoded every
row to empty values, and the TEST-02 fixture shape (Instance Type /
Instance Count) only surfaced as a misleading missing-Count error
after rows had already decoded wrong. Validate the header up front
against the required set (Service, Region, ResourceType, Count) and
name the missing columns; strip a UTF-8 BOM so Excel exports parse.

Closes #1327
An explicit Count of 0 bought nothing but still triggered a live
purchase call that only the EC2 provider zero guard caught; require at
least 1 (the tool's own CSVs never emit 0, the Savings Plans client
sets Count to 1). Reject a negative EstimatedSavings as a malformed
row, and stop printing the bad value twice in parse errors (the
wrapped strconv.NumError already carries it).

📝 Walkthrough

The CSV loader now requires Term and PaymentOption in addition to the four existing columns. It validates UTF-8, accepted field values, positive counts, and nonnegative finite savings. Tests and CLI documentation cover the updated input format.

Changes: CSV input validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Header and encoding validation
cmd/multi_service_csv.go, cmd/multi_service_csv_header_test.go, CHANGELOG.md, docs/cli/README.md
The loader requires six columns, strips a UTF-8 BOM from the first header field, and validates UTF-8 in headers and records. Tests cover missing columns, encodings, and CSV edge cases. The changelog and CLI documentation describe the required columns and accepted values.
Row value and numeric validation
cmd/multi_service_csv.go, cmd/multi_service_csv_strict_test.go, cmd/multi_service_csv_test.go, cmd/multi_service_max_instances_test.go, cmd/multi_service_test.go, cmd/cancellation_prepurchase_test.go, cmd/savings_plan_purchase_test.go
The loader restricts Term and PaymentOption to accepted values, rejects counts below one and negative savings, and omits invalid input values from number parse errors. Tests and fixtures use the required columns and accepted values.

Explanation

The CSV validation changes and their tests and documentation match the stated parser objectives. However, the reviewed changes also add or refactor csvDetails, csvDetailColumns, detailCells, and service-detail reconstruction in cmd/multi_service_csv.go. These changes alter CSV report fields and purchase details, but #2116 does not require them. The current evidence does not identify a directly linked coding issue for this behavior.

Fresh baseline verification at main65a02a72 also passed: full pinned short race suite532.024s and fresh build. PR head d75df92 full race suite530.548s, pinned lint0issues, fresh build and malformed-input CLI checks pass. CI tests/lint/build/pre-commit passed; failed steps are only gosec/Trivy SARIF uploads, with no error annotations. Rerunning the failed security job and CI summary to isolate an upload/service failure; no checks bypassed. Exact claude-opus-5-5 final-SHA review still blocks merge.

CodeRabbit review at d75df92 reports no actionable comments and no inline findings. Pre-merge warnings triaged: (1) required-column contract is an owner decision because issue #1327 proposes six headers while existing minimal CSV inputs require four. Changed the PR to Refs #1327 so it stays open pending that decision; #379 separately tracks value validation. (2) Engine/Deployment Details reconstruction is already present on base65a02a72 and absent from this PR diff, so removing it would be an unrelated regression. (3) Boilerplate docstrings conflict with the project comment policy; local review removed branch-added narration rather than adding it. Security-upload retry completed successfully on attempt2; CI is green. Exact claude-opus-5-5 final-SHA review remains required before merge.

Merge-order note: #2160 (Savings Plan purchases) merges first. When this PR is rebased onto it, add a ResourceType column to the fixture of TestCSVReader_MalformedHourlyCommitmentRejected, and keep the 7 detail columns (PlanType, HourlyCommitment, InstanceFamily, OfferingID, DetailsRegion, Tenancy, Scope) appended at the end of the CSV header.

Owner decision: all six columns are required. Term must be 1yr or 3yr and
PaymentOption all-upfront, partial-upfront or no-upfront on every row; blank
or unknown values fail with the row number. Existing 4-column CSVs now fail
with an error naming the missing columns (breaking change).

Gate verdict: APPROVE at a41c301

Independent adversarial review (gate agent, claude-opus-5-5, non-author), treated as a money-input path.

Purchase path (CSV row to purchase call): loadRecommendationsFromCSV -> parseCSVRecord sets rec.Term/rec.PaymentOption only via parseCSVEnum (cmd/multi_service_csv.go:174-183), which rejects blank and anything not exactly 1yr|3yr / all-upfront|partial-upfront|no-upfront. No code between load and PurchaseCommitment (prepareCSVPurchaseRun, runCSVPurchases, processCSVService, purchaseSingleRec, executePurchase) reassigns Term/PaymentOption; --term/--payment are read only by the fetch path (cmd/multi_service_helpers.go:585-596) and validators, so per-row values are what the provider uses (go providers: ec2 client.go:485-489, savingsplans client.go:476-480 read rec.Term/rec.PaymentOption).

Round trip: AWS recs carry params.Term/params.PaymentOption (go providers/aws recommendations parser_ri.go:61-62, parser_sp.go:257-258), which come from the validated hyphen flags and 1yr/3yr (multi_service_helpers.go:584-596). Gate probe wrote a dry-run export via createDryRunResult + writeMultiServiceCSVReport with a Compute SP (3yr/all-upfront), EC2 RI (1yr/partial-upfront) and RDS (3yr/no-upfront) plus the TOTAL row; loadRecommendationsFromCSV reloaded all 3 with exact Term/PaymentOption. The writer never emits display forms for AWS rows; All Upfront is now rejected with line/column.

Header/value edges (probe): lowercase term and Term -> missing-column error; BOM header accepted; extra columns accepted; 1YR, 1yr, 3, blank PaymentOption -> CSV line 2: column N "...": ...; legacy 4-column -> CSV header missing required columns: Term, PaymentOption.

Fails-before: PR tests against the parent parser (origin/main cmd/multi_service_csv.go): HeaderValidation_1327, BOMPrefixed_1327, Encoding_1327, StrictCount, StrictEstimatedSavings, TermAndPaymentValues all FAIL; pass at head.

Mutation probes (17 on changed lines): 14 killed. Survivors, non-blocking: blank-check removal (equivalent: blank still fails as invalid value), return value -> return a (equivalent), f < 0 -> f < -1 (no test for savings in (-1, 0)).

Local (git archive of the head, GOTOOLCHAIN=go1.26.9, GOWORK=off, macOS): go vet ./... clean; go test -count=1 ./... exit 0. Real built binary in a credential-free env: legacy 4-column CSV and All Upfront CSV both exit 1 before any cloud config with the errors above; no report written. No fixture in the touched tests skips.

CI: all required checks green at this SHA; mergeStateStatus CLEAN. CodeRabbit thread on numeric error text dismissed with justification.

Non-blocking follow-ups: duplicate header names (e.g. two Term columns) silently use the last one (pre-existing buildColumnIndexMap behavior, out of #1327 scope); negative-savings boundary test; purchaseSingleRec returns an empty-Recommendation result when no service client exists (multi_service.go:633), which writes a row the strict reader rejects (pre-existing).
