The heart of this paper is our vision of what a central RSE unit in German academic institutions could look like, its structure, and the definition of nine core support modules such a unit may provide.

Suggested change to clarify that the vision is not about one central RSE unit for Germany

Our ideas take inspiration from existing RSE units in the UK and US, and adapt those to the German academic environment.
An initial survey finds that there is considerable diversity within the module distribution, even within the few considered groups.
We discuss initial observations on possible clusters, but further studies are needed.
Finally, we discuss realisation strategies.
