Purpose
Agent callers previously had to reconnect separate scientific commands and restart acquisition/calculation after a failed export. This change adds one durable workflow service shared by JSON CLI, Python API, optional MCP, and the desktop Tasks page.
Changes
Scientific evidence
Existing equations, units, diffraction/elasticity definitions, and legacy CLI contracts are retained. The 45-check analytic benchmark passed. Provider failures and empty results are distinguished; initial-model assumptions and unavailable quantities remain explicit. Database validation used deterministic offline providers, not live Materials Project access.
Validation
Offline suite: 851 passed, 6 skipped (five unavailable inherited external fixtures and optional MCP in the base interpreter).
Final affected core/delivery/CLI checks: 70 passed. GUI suite: 115 passed; final Tasks checks and real close/reopen/background behavior verified.
Clean installed wheel: 9 CLI operations and 18 official MCP stdio calls passed; pip check passed.
Recovery measurement: repeated queries/material downloads/phase calculations fell from 1/2/2 to 0/0/0 after an injected export failure. No wall-time speedup is claimed for the small fixture.
Ruff, documentation checks, and staged whitespace checks passed. Hosted checks will be verified before merge.
Checks appropriate to changed behavior completed and reported

Compatibility and provenance
New workflow interfaces are versioned separately. MCP remains an optional dependency. Existing result bundles and public calculation entry points remain supported; original inputs are preserved. Acceptance details are in docs/evidence/agent-pipeline-20261022.md.
