Update of the Kafka client libs to 4.3.1.

Some APIs have changed (deprecated methods removed) since 3.x, so a few code changes were needed.

A wee bit of code cleanup is also included.

Oh, that added when diagnosing Jure's issues. But it should be there anyway, I think.
