Surface Studio 1 - Touch Input Stops Working After Pen Usage #2236

Description

@sentamalin

Summary

Touch inputs like click or drag to scroll stop working once either tip of a Surface Pen touches the screen. A restart of the machine will fix the problem until the next time the pen touches the screen.

Device

  • Surface Studio 1 - Intel Skylake i7, 32GB RAM, NVIDIA GTX 980M
  • Pen: 3rd Generation Surface Pen (Model 1776, EYU-00009)
  • Kernels: 6.19.8.3-surface and 7.1.8-200.fc44
  • Distribution: Fedora 43/44
  • Output from diagnostics.sh full

Steps taken / diagnosis

  1. Enter an X11 or Wayland graphical session and launch an application that supports touch inputs like Firefox or Chromium
  2. Interact with the application using your finger
  3. Interact with the application using the Surface Pen
  4. Attempt to interact with the application using your finger

Expected behaviors

The screen should accept input from both the Surface Pen and touch. Interacting with the screen using the Surface Pen should not disrupt or influence the ability to interact with the screen using your finger.

Workarounds

Touch inputs will resume working after a system restart.

Notes

  • This issue occurs regardless of whether the linux-surface kernel is installed.
  • This issue occurs regardless of whether iptsd or libwacom-surface is installed.
