This issue proposes to rename some workflows:

The criteria are

• Short and consistent names
• Minimize ambiguity

However, there is an impact on existing repositories and projects in terms of needing to update the branch protection, in case of the relevant workflow being renamed.

Insights

A workflow has multiple places for IDs and names

• file-1.yml[name: N1], jobs, job_x[name: N2]
  • will be displayed as N1 / N2
  • If name: N2 is missing, then it will be displayed as N1 / job_x
• file-1.yml, jobs, job_x[uses: file-2.yml] and file-2.yml[name: N3]: N3 will not be displayed

First feedback

• In general we should be aware that renaming workflows can impact the projects using the PTB, e.g. in terms of needing to update their branch protection
• 👍 rename 'Changelog was Updated' to 'Changelog'
• ❌ rename 'Fast Checks' to 'Fast'
• ❌ rename 'Merge Gate' to 'Checks'
• #637 already proposed some conventions, e.g.
  • Each ID should be of this format: <verb>-<noun>, like set-up-python.
  • Remark 1: This seems to apply to IDs of steps, rather than workflows.
  • Remark 2: A workflow has multiple places for IDs and names (see above)

Pending

• Make IDs, names (labels), and file names of workflows match
• Create a rationale / abstract guideline on naming conventions
• Recommend max length of total workflow names
