Why can't we use markdown syntax directly

To enable Markdown view click Settings -> Markdown

I don't think that's what waybi meant. You have to use the style dropdown to e.g. format something as 'heading 1'. If you just type plain markdown (i.e. # foobar), it doesn't work.

You should be able to paste in Markdown and have it automatically render as headings/lists/etc.

The README clearly says that live editing is not supported.

One could expect that importing or pasting markdown would work because Import as Markdown is listed in the Features

However Import Markdown is also listed in the Todo so I guess it's not supposed to work.

This is with Etherpad 2.3.2 and ep_markdown 1.0.2 from https://github.com/ether/ether-plugins/tree/main/ep_markdown

BTW what is the relationship between this repository and https://github.com/ether/ether-plugins ?

Todo is out of date.

ether-plugins is just a monorepo, can be mostly ignored.
