What happened?

Niri is a scrollable tiling window manager where windows are organised in resizable columns on an infinitely scrollable environment. When resizing a column that has VirtualBox in it, if it's being resized over the default 50% size, VirtualBox will reset the size back to the original size, meaning one is unable to resize it beyond a certain width. This also occurs when the window is floating.

This was reported to Niri, it's tagged as an issue with xwayland-satellite but I was told to report it here as well. Long-term it seems this would be solved by VirtualBox fully implementing Wayland support.

Niri bug report: niri-wm/niri#3216

How can we reproduce this?

  1. Launch a virtual machine using Niri.
  2. Increase the width size.
  3. Observe that VirtualBox resets its size.

Did you upload all of your necessary log files, screenshots, etc.?

  • Yes, I've uploaded all pertinent files to this issue.
