Issue description

Hello Everyone,

I am currently working on an SPFx project with React, and the project is running smoothly.

I am currently working with a Microsoft 365 E5 license along with Microsoft Copilot. For development, I use Visual Studio Code and Azure DevOps as my code repository. I have already implemented automation test cases using Playwright for the project.

Going forward, I would like to integrate AI to further enhance the project’s functionality. Specifically, I aim to leverage AI for code review during commits, improve and maintain existing automation test cases, and implement comprehensive unit test coverage.

To improve development efficiency, I have been exploring AI integration options and found that Microsoft Copilot, along with Claude, can work within Visual Studio Code to significantly boost SPFx development productivity with AI-powered capabilities.

Could anyone please guide me on how to effectively integrate and use Copilot with Visual Studio Code for SPFx development?

Yes, you can effectively integrate AI tools into your SPFx + React development workflow using VS Code.

1. GitHub Copilot in VS Code

Install:

• GitHub Copilot
• GitHub Copilot Chat

Then sign in with your GitHub account.

Note: Microsoft 365 E5 + Microsoft Copilot does not automatically include GitHub Copilot licensing.

Copilot works well for:

• React/TypeScript code generation
• PnPjs and SharePoint REST API usage
• SPFx property pane configuration
• Refactoring and debugging

2. AI-Assisted Code Reviews

Since you use Azure DevOps, a good approach is:

• Configure PR validation with ESLint, Prettier, Jest, and Playwright

• Use Copilot Chat locally to review changes before pushing:

  • Select code → Copilot -> Review and Comment

You can also use Husky pre-commit hooks for lint/test validation.

3. Playwright Test Improvements

Install the Playwright Test for VS Code extension.

Useful Copilot prompt:

Review this Playwright test for an SPFx web part and suggest improvements for selector stability and maintainability.

4. Unit Testing

Copilot can help generate Jest + React Testing Library test cases for SPFx components, including mocks for SPFx context and sp-http.

5. Claude Models

Depending on your Copilot plan/org settings, you may also be able to use Claude models (like Claude Sonnet) directly from the Copilot Chat model selector in VS Code.

As mentioned earlier, we have a Microsoft 365 E5 license along with a Microsoft Copilot license, and we are using Azure DevOps.

Are there any other Microsoft-provided extensions or AI tools available that can be used with an M365 account, without requiring a separate GitHub account login?

There is currently no Microsoft-native AI extension for VS Code that provides full Copilot-like coding assistance using an M365 account alone.

Microsoft 365 Copilot is focused on productivity apps (Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel, SharePoint) and does not extend to IDE-level coding assistance in VS Code.

With your existing M365/Entra ID setup, the following Microsoft AI capabilities are available, but these cover DevOps workflows only and not inline coding:

• Copilot in Azure DevOps: PR summaries, work item insights (M365 / Entra ID)
• Microsoft Copilot (Web): Ad-hoc code review, documentation (M365 account)
• Azure DevOps MCP (preview): Natural language queries for work items/PRs (M365 / Entra ID)

Note: These do not provide inline code suggestions, test generation from code, or IDE-level assistance inside VS Code.

For your specific requirements — SPFx development, Playwright test improvements, and Jest unit test coverage — GitHub Copilot is the only option that covers all three inside VS Code.
