How to know if I need to recompile assets?

I see the fresh? and stale? methods, but they are private. Is there a way to run a one-line script on the command line to see if the assets need to be built?

git_head doesn't tell me if the assets have been compiled.

These methods are not part of the public API, but build is idempotent, it would exit early if assets have already been precompiled.

Would you describe your use case?

I use

to know when a site was updated. boot_time tells me the time, and git_head tells me the commit. fresh? and stale? would tell me if the assets have been compiled. There was one time where I forgot to compile assets after updating the code. The app worked on one server, but not the other. fresh and stale would give me something I can add to an endpoint to tell if the assets have been compiled. That way I could look at an endpoint. I wouldn't need to ssh into the server to run the build command.
